I was all set to go for a pair of powercolor r9 280x cards however having aread on the internet the 770 in sli seems to be as good if not better in certain tests. Out of the 2 what would be the better cards to go for. The 770 I seen was the gainward card 2gb iirc and there is only 10 quid roughly between both makes so unsure which to go for

I am having so many problems with AMD cards atm (faulty fan, driver issues, artifacts, poor fps in games) I would go for a GTX 770 (Gigabyte).

What resolution do you run?

At 1600p or less, I'd say go with whatever is cheaper / is biased towards the games you play. People will bang on here about how the 280x is superior due to it having a higher memory bus and more vram, but until you start running very high resolutions, you're not going to get the full benefit of that - albeit apart from the odd, rare instance.

If all things go well should be a 4770k, z87x-oc gigabyte board,8gb ddr3 2400, its a work in progress. I'm trying to make a gaming pc over 6-8 weeks which hopefully when built won't need upgrading for 2-3 years. Plan on playing across 3 monitors in 5760X1080p if that's correct res

If you'll be gaming on that kind of resolution, I'd discount GTX770 SLI. I'd go for 280x crossfire - that is unless you can't stretch to a 780 or 290. You could always buy one higher end card, and add another a month or two down the line?
