I'm looking for a great 775 cooler which screws into the motherboard rather than clicks. Do all of the 775 coolers 'click' into the motherboard? I'm sure I saw that the Tuniq Tower screws in ..?

Well Incase you didn't already know, I'm getting appauling results with an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro on my E6300 (at stock voltage and clock) and DS4.

I'm currently idling at 50'c (case temp 30'c, house temp is probably 25'c because my mum is a proper numpty with the heating :p ).

Case cooling is 120mm sucks out back, 120mm pulls in from the front, 80mm blows in from the side.

I have tried:
  • Clearing BIOS (using jumper, definately did the right jumper as I lost all my settings)
  • Loading BIOS's optimised defaults
  • Upgrading BIOS
  • Changing EIST, Fan Control Method, etc, etc, to the better settings
  • Re-applying the heatsink at different angles
  • Applying thermal paste using multiple methods
  • LAPPING THE CPU
  • Double-triple-quadruple-checking that the ACF7 is properly clicked and locked in
  • Rearranging case cooling

And it hasn't made a lot of difference...

So, basically, as I've lapped the CPU I can't send it back even if I did manage to successfully argue that the CPU is a fault with intel.

I don't know if my heatsink is at fault here, but I'm pretty sure that I've exhausted every other option... and I think that if I had one that screwed in and was a better performer, then at least I know that the heatsink isn't the problem..!

So yeah, long way to ask a short question: Whats the best cooler that's 775, screws in, and is £50 or less? (maybe a little more if there's a good reason to spend it)

I think that the tuniq tower 120 does have screws rather than the clips but i haven't got one (yet) so don't take my word for it 100%. That’s the cooler I’m thinking of rather than the ninja I currently have if it will solve the stock heat problems. Other than the freezer pro you already have I haven't looked into any other coolers but it looks like that’s the one to get these days :)

yep tuniq tower 120 uses screws, very good - works a treat :) if you have access to the MM i believe there is one on sale in there by a very nice chap

I have no idea how to get in there  Does the link only appear when you've been here for a few months or something?

Something's not right. I would suggest water cooling, especially as the CPU has been lapped which suggests poor conduction of heat from the cores to the IHS. You might even be better to look at selling the CPU to someone looking to go phase cooling and get another one. You could spend a small fortune on increasingly enormous £35-£50 air coolers with no real benefit. Sorry.

Yeah 'tis true. You've come to the same conclusion I came to, I thought about holding a soldering iron onto the IHS to heat the solder between the cores and IHS, then pressing down on the IHS while the solder cooled again... But then I thought nah, it's too risky and it probably wouldn't fix anything even if the cores are wonky.

Do you think anyone will want a lapped e6300 with poor cooling..?

I did TRY to lap the bottom of the ACF7, but the legs on the HSF made it pretty difficult - they even got in the way if I unclipped them. So I gave up with lapping that.

I think that either the HSF isn't making proper contact or the IHS isn't making proper contact. That's why I wanted screws - so I could screw it nice and tight to make sure that the HSF is making proper contact, then at least I'd know if it was the IHS or not. Because once I've done that, the IHS itself is the only thing left to be at fault from what I can see.

True. I bought an AF7 Pro (Crap - IMO), upgraded to TuniqTower & now, even though the Tower is a very good cooler I'll be water cooling. (as soon as I find time to install it).

I think if you put it on Member's Market at a realistic price certain people would bite your hand off. Easyrider is just about to go phase cooling - maybe he's looking for a deal on a 'hot' E6300?
