Like the many, I am jumping onto i5, new parts should arrive tomorrow, is it worth also reformatting or can you get away without having to do it??

Id say its definitely worth formatting, ive seen instances of people just sticking in the new hardware but changing chipset drivers etc, id personally back up all your important stuff and just do a fresh install., besides new parts deserve a nice clean install to really shine.:D

Didn't need to format mine (Win 7). Just went straight in and after a reboot it was perfect and ready to go. This was coming from another Intel chipset, so not a major change as the onboard audio chip is the same (and obviously gfx and other bits).

I've never changed chipset before without doing a fresh install of windows, might give it a go this time though and just see what happens as I'll be reinstalling windows again when Win7 comes out anyway. Normally I wouldn't bother but I'm sure I can struggle by with a flakey install for a month or so assuming it will actually boot into windows.

What's the best approach, uninstall chipset drivers before shutting down existing system (currently on NForce 650i Ultra chipset)?

I went from a Q6600 to a i7 without reinstalling and everything went fine. I would say install the hardware and see if windows works ok after before formatting.
