Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade on a very tight budget.

Have bought a friends old PC for £50, which is socket 775 and picked up an E8500 cheap on eBay, so looking to clock this.

Looking for advice on motherboards and RAM, would love 8GB RAM, USB3 and Crossfire for further future proofing, but if that's not possible no worries.

Want to spend as far under £100, but don't mind a touch over if it's really worth the extra :)

Don't mind second hand either so any model numbers fire away and I'll try look them up :)

Have you tried posting in the Member's Market too?

Not yet but keeping an eye out, thought I'd post in here for things to look for as I've been out the loop for so many years :(

Also would a Corsair HX520w be capable of running a newer graphics card like a r9 270x?

Will be fine even for a 280 but the E8500 will bottleneck it. With a decent P45 board such as the P5Q Pro series you could get up to 4.5Ghz out of a E8500. Personally I think it's not worth it. You won't get USB3 on any decent board. Gigabyte did a couple of G41/P43 chipset boards toward the end of the sockets life with USB3 but they were based on basic boards with limited overclocking. Socket 775 is ancient now and DDR2 is fetching premium prices. I would sell the bits and re-invest the money from the sale to get a better platform. £100 would get you a decent 1156 board and a i5 760 and 8GB of DDR3 is around £40-45 in the MM.

Was just thinking that and was about to post :) Sounds like that's the way forward cheers mate :)

Any recommendations on the motherboard?

Keep checking the MM as there have been some good bundles recently. You missed a cracker yesterday as a 3570K and Z77 board went for £120!! Teenwolf's i7 930 bundle is a good one if he's prepared to wait for you, especially if he finds the 8GB of ram.

Perfect, fingers crossed he doesn't mind waiting :)

All very decent coolers. Might also be worth looking through the MM, through some of the older threads going back a month or so.
