I did plan on Upgrading to an I5 or AMD X6 when sandy bridge came out but with me been super stupid i installed my new OEM copy of windows 7 on my 775 board not knowing that it would be locked to that motherboard :mad:.
So now i will have to upgrade the 775 and stick with that for a bit longer. the part's i would be happy upgrading are.

Intel core 2 duo E6600 -> Quad Q6600 or Q8300?
XMS2 4gb 800mhz -> motherboard will take 8gb but only 2 slots (i will told never to run max ram?)
X1900xt -> i have a HIS ATI Radeon HD 5670 512mb in the post

I think the CPU would be the best first upgrade?

You dont have to at all i installed my old wjndows vista on my sons pc you just need to ring microsoft and they give you a code to type in.

+1 im sure you can still phone up and get it swapped to your new build even though it is an oe copy. Its an automated call so its not like you need to talk to anyone. Just install and wait until you are prompted to phone up and activate.

You can try the above, but yeah upgrading your socket 775 is still a viable option and will be a lot cheaper
Yeah if you can source a 2nd hand Q6600 G0 stepping for circa £70 and OC it youll get nice results
Yes youre correct re the RAM, adding more than 2 sticks puts extra strain on the memory controller and limits OCing, also for gaming (I assume thats what this is for given sig?) 4 gig is plenty still
Then you can upgrade gfx for a single new card, depending on budget depends recomendation but as you mention a whole new system I guess this isnt strict, if I were you Id get a 6950 for circa £200 (if you want to this can then be flashed to a 6970 - see the gfx card forum re this)
