780 Bottlenecks.

Hi Guys,

Im considering a 780 Lightning as my next upgrade and wondered if my AMD 8350 would bottleneck?


I'll be playing and streaming BF4, Dayz, etc...

I would like to get the most out of my system and not waste cash if you know what i mean :)
 
You'll bottleneck depending on the games, severity depends on the game and the clock of your FX8350.
It won't give unplayable FPS, it just means you'll be spending money you're not seeing the gain from.
 
Aye, cpu is pretty low-end unfortunately :(

Good news is though if you do get a 780 (forget the Lightning tbh, waste of cash) then you'll be able to carry it over when doing your next build :) (if that's planned for the near future)
 
Only reason to get a 780 is to get performance now though.
Waiting to see the gain, you may's well wait till 20nm and get much better performance.

Bit of a fallacy there Jedi :p

If you have an FX-8350 you might be better off waiting a few weeks for the R9 290/X, In December, AMD should be putting out 'Mantle' which offloads a lot of the CPU work onto the GPU, so theoretically no more Bottlenecks.

Or, you might need to upgrade the CPU to something like an i7 4770K / 39##K.

We don't know how well Mantle's going to be supported, it's very much an unknown.

All we know is, it works in BF4, we have no idea how effective it is, we have no idea if you need an AMD CPU/GPU.

AMD said in GPU14 Mantle will off load the CPU on to the GPU eliminating CPU derived bottlenecks.

One thing is for sure, its not going to work with the 780, so its a new CPU, Motherboard and GPU or just a new GPU.

So mantle's not all that open then, AMD GPU's only?

I've largely ignored all the conjecture, because it's annoying and the hypocrisy is stunning.
But then I hear Nvidia have their own API like Mantle, or something.

Which makes mantle for Nvidia, moot, but still.

Best wait till we have the full picture before anything really.
But I agree, I'd probably get the R9 290X over the 780 (price depending)

My only problem is i have only just recently upgraded to Am3+ MOBO and the 8350 so looking to get as much performance as possible, I figured graphics are the next step, im currently running a 2GB 6950 which has served me well. I cant really afford to shell out for a full Intel set up, altough i would love to.

Mantle looks really clever, but the uncertainty with the 290 series cards worry me, especially as no price has been set for top line.

As you guys think i will be bottlenecking with the 780, what card would you recommend? Dont worry about price, Sub 780 territory. :)
 
As i said, Just wait a little, ^^^ you might find the R9 290 affordable.

The next best thing is a 7970.

Nvidia have NVAPI, DICE used it in BF3 and they will be using it in BF4, but NVAPI does not go directly to the metal, its not really the same thing, it certainly didn't help them in BF3, AMD still ended up faster in the end.

I can't see any bottleneck honestly ! yes the games may run faster on a core i7 3930K but they will run fine on the FX 8350 and if you even plan to stream while gaming those extra cores will benefit in gaming.

Any reason you went with the AM3+ route over the 1150 route? Getting as much performance as you can is contradicted by the FX83 to be honest.

At any rate, get the 7970.

You'll still have a decent system, mantle will work with the 7970.

Why buy something like a 780 if you're not getting performance over a lower card because of the bottleneck.

Unless you like blowing an extra 280 quid for performance you're not getting....

Also, DayZ is going to be quite hampered by that FX83.

Then you can always up the image quality higher since the GPU has enough grunt to work with it. You may get 60FPS wit 0xMSAA and the CPU is "bottlenecking", but you can turn up 16xMSAA now and still get 60FPS with a much better image quality - that is still gaining performance.
 
16x MSAA is just wasting grunt for the sake of removing the bottleneck, unless you're at a tiny resolution.

It'd be far more logical to downsample, but AMD have no method of downsampling with their GPU's.

I'm not arguing it won't be playable, but I want the frames.

Or if you just hate jaggies generally like me :rolleyes: I'm in for the quality of gaming not so much for the frames anymore :cool:

But I guess it's each to his/her own preference ;)

Mantle is an API not an implementation - regardless of how open it may be it still won't work on nVidia hardware unless they implement support for it which they won't have been able to do yet and most likely never will.

History is littered with 'open' standards causing divisions, not least in the case of OpenGL with its proprietary extensions...

I'd just downsample at 4K rather than use an unrealistic amount of AA.
I hate jaggies too, but I also want a very good frame rate.

I had an AM3+ board and decided to go with the affordable upgrade over intel. I know theres always a debate over AMD and intel, Thats cool, I would be tempted to go with Intel on my next build though, just trying to figure out what's best for me right now.

My current rig works great with BF3, 120 +FPS no worries, Dayz isnt amazing but a lot of those issues are serverside. Some servers im on 70fps, which is fine.

Maybe the 7970 is a better choice, especially if mantle works the ways it's meant to and reliable. But AMD driver support has always lacked for me, hence the reason i pulled an Nvidia card out the bag in my OP.
