Hey guys, I just recently got my 4th replacement 780 Classy.

Now I finally have a card that seems perfectly fine except for one thing. HEAT!

My other 3 Classies never reached 80c. It took 1.3v usually to get them around that temp.

My new one is reaching almost 85c at times while gaming. That's at 1.25v, but even at 1.212 it still goes over 80c.

What is causing such a huge difference in temps between this card and the other 3 I had?

What is the fan speed when you get to those temps?

It could be anything including more power to the PCB from the BIOS, or something changed to your case airflow.

See our 295X2s most working at stock speeds with -70mV while at 0mV they generate a lot of heat for nothing.

Also what was the problem with the 3 previous Classi? Usually they are pretty good.

Fan speed is at 100% at those temps. So quite noisy!

Case is the same setup as before.

First Classy was giving me grey screens and crashing. 2nd one was amazing... for 20 hours then something popped while setting at desktop. Was dead after that. 3rd one had to be underclocked to keep it from crashing while gaming. Now the 4th one is very hot.

First time going with EVGA. Not impressed really lol. :D

Thermal paste. If you got a replacement, it's a repaired unit, so it's likely the paste is being applied manually.

What makes you think it is a repaired unit?

When I talked to EVGA they told me they would pull a brand new unit for me.

At 1.2v it was hitting 78c in Unigine Heaven by the 3rd run. That is at 100% fan speed.

It was still not done going up in temp. In BF4 it always gets to 80c+.

My other cards seemed to hit their max temp pretty fast and stay there. This one seems to just slowly keep getting hotter until it gets to 80c or more.

Really? My 780 reference died, i was sent 3 replacements, which all had signs of use, and they said they were all in fact, repaired units. The 4th arrivied in a sealed box, but the card itself had scratches and signs of use.

could have just be the chip running hotter. No chip is identical. With 100% fan speed and 78c, i would call it a defect. Ask in the EVGA thread, sounds dodgy.

The whole point was to buy a 780 to hold me off until the 9 series launched.

Here I am still without a 100% working 780 and the 9 series are here. So maybe I can work some magic and get them to send me a 980 as a replacement since I planned to step up anyway.

Getting a GPU is becoming to much work. :D

Give it a try :) EVGA have brilliant customer service so you may get lucky. After 4 faulty cards I'd say you deserve it.

Tbh if i were the op, id send the card back and get a refund. Then use the money to buy a new card from a reputable manufacturer with a uk based warranty. 4 replacements with long expensive trips to germany isnt a sign of good customer service tbh.

I'd replace the thermal paste and test first.

Then if you are still not happy contact their CS and inquire into getting a 970 or 980 as part of then step up program or whatnot.

I just got done talking with EVGA. He suggested putting new thermal paste on it. Or to RMA it, or just use the step up program for the 980 ACX 2.0.

What do you guys think? Should I just bite and go for the 980 ACX now?

Only you can decide that. The cards either faulty or it isn't.
