Buying this friday for a friend to go with 4770k. He currently only has a corsair 550w psu so with the 290 a new psu is a definate but with the 780 a maybe?

About £400 is his limit and he's not really an OC'er. 780 on 550w roughly 400. 290 + new psu is about the same. He'll mainly be playing bf4 at 1080p.

The idea that a R9 290 pulls a massive amount of extra power over a 780 is overstated. To be honest if an extra 30 watts is going to render your PSU worthless then you need a new PSU, PERIOD.

Honestly a decent 550w PSU will run both cards on a 4770K as long as serious overclocking of the CPU and GPU is not on the agenda. So your friend will be fine as he doesn't OC.

If noise is a concern then stay away from the R9 290, the problem is justifying the extra cost for a GTX780 here on OCUK.

I would get a custom cooled 780 if I were you. You can't really lose either way though. Both perform similarly. The big unknown in Mantle and how much that will boost performance on AMD cards.

I know you said friday but if you can hold off till 2nd week of december then thats when the non reference cooler 290s are supposedly coming(tho not sure if that's usa or europe).

I heard quite a lot of people complain about stability issues and some really bad bugs ith 290s and bf4. Probably just drivers, but for me if something isn't stable it's not worth saving money on it.
So wait for proper drivers/cooling and buy 290 or buy a 780 now, evga's classy is on the offer this week for just 440£.

Driver problems are present on both sides dude.... I would wait as the third party 290/290X's will out end of this month.

Either tbh, that Gigabyte card above is a good deal BUT I think the extra vRam (and much cheaper price)on the 290 might swing it for me :D

I have the 290X and not found it to be loud at all tbh
