Hi,

If they were the same price, which would you get?

Mainly for BF4 to replace 5850 crossfire.

290 is fantastic but has a fairly loud cooler, so at present could do with water cooling or wait it out for a custom cooler (6-8 weeks).

780 has custom coolers already both perform within whiskers of each other with the OC version of the 780 comfortably beating the 290 and X in most games.

Mantle is coming and it is all speculation on performance gains, so if you are in no rush, wait it out till December/January to see what is what.

Same price? That's a tough one, i'd probably lean towards a 780. Not sure why though.

If thr gap is more than about a fiver i'd get the cheapest though

I wouldn't upgrade a gcard just because of one game and certainly not for any future money milking Battefield titles.
Anyway my personal choice would be made upon the games I play, whether the settings I have provide me a with good performance, then budget and the scalabilty of overclocking of the card are additional factors and how quiet the card is and the quality of the cooler.

If they were the same price and you can't wait for the 3rd party cooler 290s and hopefully uprated power regs' or aren't interested in making or fitting a custom cooler to the 290 then yeah get a 780.

But they are not the same price, however I'd still go for a 780 at this present time however I would only get a 780 on the basis it could hit 1250 on the core as a minimum.

As it currently stands I personally find the GTX780's point in the market totally silly. It's just not worth £70 over the R290 and badly needs a price drop to make it competitive.

What games Greg?

I agree though, if your buying now, get a 780, unless you plan on watercooling the 290/X.

If I was forced to buy now I would probably go for the 780.

However as I do the upgrade itch to replace the 680, I'm going to wait until the custom cooled 290s arrive and we have more information about Mantle.

Looking at the games on the horizon for the next few months however I may end up keeping the 680 and saving for a 20nm card when they launch in 2014.

I think for now at the same price i would pick the 780 but the problem now is mantle as we dont realy know what its going to bring to the table, i would hate to buy a 780 now only to see it get well stuffed buy a cheaper gpu due to mantle

Can't comment on custom coolers, but between my reference 780 and a 290 i'd take the 780 anyday, just seems like a more premium product.

Of course the 290 with a custom cooler will still be a great card...Just the reference design screams cheap to me.
