780 or 970 on oldish system

This is my current system:

VTX3D HD 7970
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (clocked to 4.6)
Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB
ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750M High Performance 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020040-UK)
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9)

My brother is offering me his 780 as he wants a 980. Its the Gigabyte WINDFORCE 3X GV-N780OC-3GD.

Or should I spend a bit more and get a 970, or will my system hold it back?

Currently on 24" 1920x1200, but perhaps looking to get a 29" widescreen.

Your setup will cope with either card fine. The 970 is a bit faster and will run a bit cooler and use less power. The wf 780 is still a very good card though.

thanks, prob just better saving some pennies and getting the 780 off my brother. then buy the 980 when he is bored and upgrades again, lol.

Just remind him 780 prices have collapsed-£200 new or custom cooled like the 780 DCuII new@£230.
