Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading my Radeon 9800 pro to one of the following:

BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256mb
Gainward Bliss GeForce 7800 GT Silent 512mb
XFX GeForce 7800 GS 256mb
XFX GeForce 7800 GS Extreme Edition 256mb

Would my cpu (P4 3.06GHz) or ram (1.5Gb) be a bottleneck for any of these cards? ANy advice of what card to buy? Thanks,

q

No your cpu and ram is good, some gammers like 2gig today for FEAR / CoD2 and BF2, but they have gone from 1gig not 1.5gig like yours. :)

Hmm, why does system edit out > ** < instead of me saying YOUR ?

Theres a filter to stop text speak or something, your CPU, and your Ram should be fine as said, if your sticking to AGP then go for the Gainward Bliss 7800 GT, cracking card, and will probably overclock to a GTX, and higher. :)

Welcome to the forums btw to you both. :)

Thanks,

Just one more question. Is a 400w power supply (akasa) enough for these cards? Think I know the answer to this one but I just want to confirm.

q

THANKS

Should be as branded and Nvidia did over spec for 6800Ultra when new and as they claimed it was to give HEADROOM for overclocking.

From the Gainward box sitting on my knee right now:

Min 400watt psu and 2 free molex power connectors needed.
(comes with 1 pci-e to molex adapter (has 2 molex sockets on it)

:)

Its good brand one fo the best years ago, went through bad stage like Gainward are now getting out of, There is a better superclocked model of that card though and still they are all 16piped GS's (core is marked as 7800), Gainwards GS stands for Golden Sample (on box) and its real GT core with 20pipes and 7vertex. (core is marked as 7800GT A2 rev).

460/1350 and its said they gonna do even faster one soon. :)

You may well regret later not paying the extra £30ish for the Gainward even the added ram is good esp 1.4ns which is good for 1400MHZ going by the book, I can hit 510/1475 artifact free with no volt mods yet. :D

BTW, edit out other stores urls, only post info like cards makers site cause you get in bother as thats competition to OcUK :( .

Thanks for the advice. The gainward does look really good but I'm just not sure. Forgetting the gainward, which card would you go for?

PS post edited ;)

Got mine the other day, went from the 9800 pro to a Gainward Bliss 7800 GT 512mb AGP on a 2GB P4 3200 @ stock.

3D 05 went from 2725 to 6444 ( 6581 mild oc ) :D
Not tried 3D 06 yet.

Huge difference in image quality in HL2, you can almost `smell` the grime on the floors and the face detail is very good, worth the extra £
You get a free oldish game with the pack.
Also does what it says on the box, very quiet

I had a 6800U running 470/1250 so I was temped by the EVGA Superclocked card I linked to but it wasnt much a upgrade from a Ultra esp as both are 256MB ram, this Gainward made my decision easy, there is said to be a Gainward 7900GT 512MB due possibly thats will drop price slightly on this one (possbily), but Im told by staff it will be £120 more so approx £400 inc vat but will be a real 24 pipe 7900GT core :)

The current Gainward 7800GT AGP is supposed to be a `limited edition` of 2500 I think I read somewhere and overclockers have most if not all the stock so I don`t think this current card is going to drop in price
£400 is too much IMO for a graphic card, especialy an AGP one unless you have an uber cpu, DX10 is out early next year which is reported to dramaticaly improve the processing of the 3D image

Yeah 400w should be fine, not that power hungry Nvidia cards. :)

Mine runs fine with an Antec truepower 380 watt (non ATX2 PSU ) :)

One of the reasons I did not go with new mobo / PCI-E was the ? over needing a new PSU

Ok I know all that and I do have a uber CPU and I am waiting on Vista for few grand rig built, so this card is good fillgap and I know price may not drop as I stated in brackets, but It will get me good cash back on E-Bay to buy the 7900GT 512MB if it is made, also Gibo stated they have got all the stock and are going to act as hub.

P.S you dont need new PSU, its only advised you get a 24pin ATX 2.X PSU if you want to go down SLI road.

That might be the case for Nvidia cards but being a bit of an ATI fanboy and wanting a SM3.0 card I was considering going new mobo with a Radeon X1900 XT which ATI suggests requires a 450-Watt power supply or greater with 30 Amps on 12 volt rail for a fully loaded system (Nvidia cards need less juice on average)

Having `only` a 380W PSU and like you looking to do new rig for DX10 felt that the Gainward 7800GT AGP was the best bang for pound option for me,
thanks for the info anyway :)
