My 7800GT is making odd noises from time to time, instead of getting myself a new fan or another 7800GT I think I'm just gonna grab a new card, my question is, what will give me similar or improved performance for little cost, I don't game all that much anymore but want at least the same performance as a 7800GT.

I'm using a 480w Tagan so power may be an issue these days?

How about:

I'm using two monitors but don't even understand the type of connections on these cards anymore :)

and also 256 DDR3 or 512 DDR2?

Cheers!

What budget you looking at spending?

As little as possible, if the above card is what I need then £60 :)

I'm looking for the cheapest card that will be equal to a 7800GT so whatever that costs is my budget. Certainly no more than £100 hopefully a lot less. Obviously if there is something equivalant for £60 and something twice as good for £70 I'll go for the later, just need some info, not many reviews compare 7 series to 8 series.

Nvidia only please:)

Why nvidia only? if i may ask that is...

ati x1950 pro will give you greater power, costs around 95 for the 512 MB GDDR3 version

nvidia you would need something in the line of 8600 GTS, which is not worth the money, its more expensive than the x1950 pro.

Why not try ebay?

if you dont mind losing some performance, get 8600 GT 256MB, it should be comparable and still within badget

personal pick is the X1950 PRO 512MB though

Because out of all the cards I've owned approximately four of them were ATI and I had no end of problems with every single one. Personal experience has put me off.

So in short the 8600GT doesn't perform as well as a 7800GT, fair enough. I'm keeping my eye on second hand I just want to know what I'm comparing price/performance with these days if I decide to buy new..

I would buy an aerosol can of Contact or Switch Cleaner, squirt some into the fan and let it spin up......no more noise, for a while anyway and it'll only cost you £2.50 :) Reapply as needed.

I have a solution for you. Is your Trust email correct? :)

Cheers mate but I've ordered a heatpipe cooler jobby :)

Got a can of Servisol :) might try that until my cooler arrives.

you can get x1900xts and stuff second hand for under £100 now, will blow the 7800 away (so will an x1800xt and and 1950pro i think?)

I wasn't aware that Nvidia did an X1900. And in my years of experience the term blows away is overused when it comes to graphics cards.

Anyway problem solved.

Ok I think it's only fair to let you know that I failed miserably at diagnosing the fault.

It wasn't the even the graphics card fan making the noise, my excuse is that I assumed this was where the noise was coming from without really checking because I didn't want to open up the PC and start faffing about inside it while I had my 3 kids to look after :o

Yes.....I'm a pleb it was actually the northbridge fan, off to the mobo section I go:D
