ive always had an NVidia (currently 6800GT AGP) ive been looking at the 7800GT for my move to PCI-E and also the 1900XT but which should i go with, is the 1900XT worth the extra £150+ or will the 7800GT be able to handle the current games (and future games) with no problems when put beside a 4400+ (clocked as far as it can be while still staying stable) and 2GB or RAM

also which brand?

Modern games (FEAR, COD2 etc) seem to be eating 3dcard power more than they care for CPU. Of course it's not possible to predict if this'll continue..... if so, I'd wait for the XT to come down. You're 6800gt should be fine for a while yet bud - unless you're knocking my card ;)

:Edit: Just realised it's a whole system rebuild. If it has to be now then I'd get a less expensive X2 and put the money towards an sli board +7800gt (With money left over for maybe a second in the future?) or just get the 1900xt.

thanx, i think il get the DFI SLI-D board and a 7800GT, and as u say get a 7800GT in near future, unless others can comment

...... I think you miss the point. WHy not get a 3800 or a 4200 X2 and spend the money saved on the 1900xt, or save the money for a second GT in the future?

:edit: oh and you could always get the Asrock agp + pci-e board to save having to decide on 3dcard now.

DEFINATLY go X1900XT ( or if you can order it TODAY the X1800XT - which is a bargain at the moment beating all but the X1900XT and £400+ 7800's into a 'cocked hat' ) as the 7800GT is really not that good. worth the extra £150? Hell yes without a doubt, the X1900XT on it's own will often beat a PAIR of top end £400 7800 GTX's.. nuff said.

Any X1900XT will do you fine :) XT-X is overpriced really as it's only a small increase on an awsome card so just go for the 'basic' XT.

Maybe slightly however, several reviews show 7800 512 GTX's in SLI mode beaten, in some games, by a single X1900XT (or XT-X - not a huge difference between them ) - and where the GTX's are quicker than the single unsurprisingly a pair of XT's are quicker.

The review I just looked at (note where I say the 7800's win I mean a single X1900XT is beaten by TWO 7800GTX 512's - I'm ignoring single X1900XT vs single 7800GTX as that isn't any contest what so ever) :-

BF2 - X1900XT wins (the review didn't show a SLI for this test so suspect this is a game that doesn't support SLI - which does happen sometimes - unlike crossfire).
DoD (HL2) - Once you plug in AA dnd AF ( which most people do ) the Solo XT beats the pair of 7800 GTX's.
Farcry - loses out but the pair of X1900XT's are better than the SLI pair.
F.E.A.R - Wins again ( once some AA and AF is enabled ).
Splinter Cell - Loses out but the Crossfire pair beats SLI pair
Quake IV - Loses out but Crossfire pair wins.

Point I was making, which is very valid, is that the X1900XT is a fantastic and very good value piece of kit. NOTHING on the market comes close to it at the moment - except the double 7800GTX SLI on one hybrid card but that's silly money and probably beaten by the comparable Crossfire pairing.
