Is the 7800GT compatible with VGA monitors (with an adaptor), I assume yes but I don't want to buy one and then have to shell out over £200 for a new monitor.

Apparently so. Some kind soul posted a picture when I asked the same question a while back.

Or you could buy a DVI-A to VGA cable. Lindy are apparently the brand of choice.
