Hi All,

Never really been into gaming, but have been playin some of the latest titles and now have the bug! Currently running 2 x 6600GT's and wanted an upgrade to run Quake 4, Doom 3, Far Cry etc maxed out at 1280x1024. Don't know a lot about Grfx cards, so if someone could recommend or explain what the differences would be between the following, that would really help. The 3 setups are very similar in cost.

7800GT Extreme (450/1050)
X1800XL
2x 6800GS SLI'd

Thanx in advance,

PoDd :)

As far as I understand it this is how it goes performance wise:

1* 7800GT is equivelant to around 2*6800GT/X in SLI
I believe the 6800GS is better than the 6800 GTX ( much more recent gpu) but no comparison to 7800 series
The X1800XL is meant to have best IQ and potential pic quality but is slower performance than 7800GT

Personally I would go for one7800GT and save up for another to go SLI rather than investing in last generation (ie 68 series)

Or you could go Crossfire route and get the 1800XL ( I would personally get the master card first, and go for XT rather than XL if you can)

There was no 6800GTX :)

The 6800GS is almost around 6800GT level, its lacking some pipes but has a higher clock speed. Out of all that lot they will offer similar performance but as said I'd go for a 7800GT as you can always get another to shove it in SLI.

Definitely the GT. The cheapest GT's are about £210 so it's a relatively cheap upgrade. SLI's also pretty mature now, I've had very little trouble with it. I like the idea of Crossfire though won't be touching it for a while yet.

Thnx 4 the advice, ill prolly go with the GT then. Is it worth buyin a stock one saving 30 quid and clocking it or buyin a pre clocked one? Can u flash a stock one with the bios of a pre clocked one, in the leadtek range for example? Or just easy enuff to mod the bios urself?

PoDd:)

I think 2x6800gs will be slightly quicker than either a 7800gt or a X1800XL, but only for games that support SLi and even then not by much.

I'd plump for a 7800gt over an x1800XL any day of the week. It's probably slightly faster, it definately overclocks better and it's SLi ready.

In your case however I'd be tempted to wait a bit and get a 7800GTX at least. 2x6600gt it not all that bad and though any of the options on the table will give you a boost, it won't be as huge as you might think.

Get the cheapest GT and use coolbits or rivatuner to OC, most of them are reference designs anyway, so they're identical. Personally I can do without the old games/Massive fat boy white t-shirt/wristband bundle. If you want, you can spend the extra £30 on an aftermarket Cooler (Zalman 700 or Arctic Cooling), this'll give you better and quieter cooling and should improve your overclocking headroom.

Surely your 2x6600GT's can run those games at max detail levels at that limited resolution? My single 6600GT does pretty well at that same resolution and at settings not far away from max, although Quake 4 makes it stutter quite heavily in some places.

Sorry , I was thinking there was a higher 6800 above the GT ( long gefore the GS came out) my mistake

Yes I would go with a stock one - and if you want save the £30 for an aftermarket ( better and quieter) gfx cooler

My bfg clocks pretty good and i beleive that most if not all of them do, as stated there is downloadable software to o/c the core and memory - dont bother with bioses unless you really have to

The difference in performance between the GT and 256mb GTX is'nt all that great. I am more than happy with my pair of BFG 7800 gt's. You could always wait if you do have money to burn and see what the new cards will be like when they are released soon.
