Price range? DX11 support?

hmmm personally Id say wait and get a cheap low spec 6000 series from ATI.

If you want to by right now one of these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-000-PL&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1830 (probably what you want......)

This all depends on what kind of cpu your son is running, Id say minimum of a core 2 duo

If you can get a card with 1gb of ram... otherwise, the 768mb 460 is prob going to be a nice upgrade.

Comapraed to his existing card, the 460 is an absolute humungous upgrade!

For £2 more you can get this:

If you want cheap cheap, then a 4850 or a 4870:

Be aware tho that the 5770 is the equvalent of the 4870... the 5770 just has 512mb more ram and is dx11.

But in all honesty, I'd go with the 460. There isnt any point to save £30 buying old outdated tech at this point.

I'd have guessed something like a GT240 - in fact looking at toms hardware L4D @ 1680x1050 comes out very similar to the 7800.

If we're talking equivalent compared to todays ranges then something like the 460/5830's are about right although the 5770 is a v nice card too.

gt

Edit: What's your budget?

May I ask, what CPU is your son running?

If he has a 7800GTX then he is likely to be using something like an Athlon 64 X2. With this kind of CPU, a high-power GPU like a GTX 460 would be wasted as the CPU would limit performance in most games. Something like a GT 240, 9800GT or 5670 strike me as the best options.

in performance terms something like the GT220 has about as much gaming power... an 8600GTS was near identicle performance wise too which translates into the 9500GT (GT220)... its dx10 though thats the only issue making it not quite "todays standards". Maybe the 5450??

The cpu in his computer is my old q6600 on p45 gigabyte board 4gb ram . so no slouch . its used basicly for school work and the games i stated . doesnt really need something super powerfull .

oh the cpu is at 3.6ghz
wanted to spend no more than 100 pounds . i mean no more to . bloody kids cost me an arm and a leg :-(
If you are certain you definitely won't be paying more than £100, then...
Nvidia:

ATI:

...wherever this is going to be in stock...

...if you don't mind spending a little bit more, then:

If it's just to replace the 7800gtx and not really upgrade...
As suggested, a 512mb GT240 or a 5570. Comes in ~£35-£40 below budget and will probably outperform the 7800gtx by a reasonable amount still... :)

Edit: Scratch that... Just noticed the 9500GT is £41, pick one of those up. :)

yeah i dont need an upgrade , just need like for like really . most gaming he does is on xbox360 . like i said the 7800gtx is showing signs its ready to die .

the gtx450 looks like a good deal though . so maybee it will be one of those .

yeah i know the 9800gtx+ is a cracking card , i sold my own 2 begining of the year for an upgrade , wish i had kept one now :-( . still never mind .

GTS450 is around same speed as GTS250/9800GTX+/HD4850, but with dx11 support and better overclock potential...just thought you should know

I replaced a broken 7900gs with a GT240 in a PC. Twice as fast, less than half the size and noise.
