Hi chaps,

I have an offer of a second hand Powercolor HD3850 512mb GFX card for £45, but my question is, is it a worthwhile (cheap) upgrade to my ageing 7800GTX.

I play BF2 at 1280x1024 and nothing much else really, but find it struggles a bit in reallly crowded areas.

Thanks for helping an old git.:)

Apparently the card runs at 720mhz core and 900 x 2 memory.

It should deliver a decent performance boost so yes, it's worth it.

EDIT: Make sure your PSU can handle it because I'm not sure how much more power it uses when compared to a 7800GTX. If not go for a 4670, the performance is about the same with less power usage.

Thanks, I have scouted around and it should run fine with my 460w akasa paxpower psu.

Yep I have one and its a good card, I upgraded from a 7600GT - but I got mine for 44 quid new from OCUK about a month ago :D.

Depends a bit on whether it's the 256 or 512meg variant of 7800GTX. The latter was very quick in it's day (remember it was a lot more than just extra memory), not far off the 7900GTX. Obviously the HD3850 will slightly quicker, but maybe not quite as much as one would expect.

You're kidding...I had a 512mb 7900GT that was massively overclocked, and it was absolutely nothing in comparison with my old 3850. I even got the 3850 after owning an 8800GTS 640mb and found it slightly faster.

The 7800GTX I have is the 256mb version running at 420 mhz core and 1.2 mhz memory.

It's a little over 2 years old now and I think it's showing it's age now.

Hopefully I will see an improvement in performance?.

The card I have been offered is the extreme pcs version.
