does anyone know if a 7800 GTX is compatible/capable of HDMI output? as in 1080p ?

so if i purchased a blu-ray or hd-dvd drive in the future for my pc, would i be able to output HD movies with this card?

The card does not have a dedicated HDMI output. For example, I only have x2 DVI ports. But I have hooked it up to my HD TV via a DVI -> HDMI lead. I don't know if this means HD is working or not? Think it does. But with regards to your question I think the answer is no. (I may be totally wrong). :)

It's capable of HDMI output with DVI to HDMI cable. But, you won't be able to watch blue-ray or hd-dvd films at any of the HD resolutions as the card isn't HDCP compliant(High Definition Content Protection).

HDCP compliancy has been introduced with the 7600 and 7900 series only so far.

Another thing is that your pc monitor won't support HDCP either so you will be limited to normal DVD quality until all of your parts are HDCP compliant.

If connecting to your TV make sure that it is also HDCP compliant as a lot of older HDTV's were sold without this (kind of defeats the point really).

I'm not 100% sure but with PC's it may be the case that all of the hardware has to be HDCP compliant including the motherboard. This is to ensure that there are no possiblities of grabbing the HD data in an unencrypted format that can be copied.

Another requirement is that you will need windows vista to run HD content.

My opinion: If you want to buy a HD-DVD/BLU-RAY drive, wait until the air has cleared regarding exact specifications. maybe about 6 months or so.

Even when the air has cleared, I will probably wait until a combo driver appears so I can use both formats.
