7800GTX Q's

My mate has just bought a second hand system with the above gfx card.

When he told me what it was i suggested it was probably quite old, now ive just had an email from a competitor with a SALE on, and the gfx card in question was on there for over £200. Now whats the story behind these, surely anyone with that money to spend would have gone 8800** range?

Whats the performance like ?

Also he complains about it over heating and has got the side off at the moment and its still into the 80's.

Performance is about 1/4 of an 8800GT

They do run quite hot but they should be fine in the 80s - they were designed to run around that kind of temps...

Not sure why anyone would be selling them for £200 - they are worth about £40 tops.

Plenty of old stock around. £327.76 is the dearest in stock in the uk

Same with any other old card around. Don't forget at launch this was Nvidia's flagship card and probably cost £327.76 at launch in July 2006.

And as for performance they still give about 3/4 of a 8800GT, not a 1/4 as said.

Framerate wise they match a ATI hd3850 and 8600GTS and neither of them are a quarter of a 8800GT speed.

And yes only worth £40 2nd hand now but maybe more new. Plenty of sites still selling new for £80-£90.

I doubt 3/4 of an 8800GT... a 7950GX2 is around 75% of the performance of an 8800GT and the 7950GX2 is around twice the peformance of a 7800GTX. In some shader heavy games the 8800GT is twice as fast as the GX2 - which would make it around 4x faster than the 7800GTX in some cases and well over 2x in all others. Depends a lot on your CPU, resolution and graphics settings tho - if your playing at say 1024x768 then there wouldn't be so much in it.

Just going on toms hardware page and the framerate in all games.

Admittedly they are now old and maybe the difference is greater in COD4 etc.

I always thought a 7950gx2 wasn't far off 8800GTX speed and hence almost the same as a 8800GT?

7950GX2 is very very slightly faster than the old 8800GTS G80 - I swapped mine out for an 8800GT and in all games except ETQW* the 8800GT was about 30% faster and in some games like bioshock almost twice as fast - with the 177.39 drivers I'm getting 200fps in bioshock in places where I was only getting 80 with the GX2 - identical settings, etc.

In guildwars for instance I get 220fps in places where my brothers OC'd 7900GTO gets 120 (similiar settings, same CPU).

In the crysis benchmark I get 48fps in places where the GX2 was getting 24fps and a single 7900GTX only gets 11fps.

*In ETQW the GX2 was 25-30% faster than the 8800GT.
