7800X3D now or wait?

I was very tempted to upgrade to AM5 recently, but in the end I decided to stick with AM4 for now and grabbed a 5800X3D for £250 on Black Friday. Sold my 5800X for £130, so £120 doesn't seem bad for the uplift it offers. I've been very pleased with how much smoother WoW runs, which is a game I play a lot and benefits greatly from the cache. Obviously the 7800X3D is even better, but I found myself pretty underwhelmed by the current crop of AM5 motherboards, or at least the ones priced in any sensible manner. I'm using an MSI X570 ACE and have been extremely happy with it, so "upgrading" to a bottom of the barrel budget AM5 board didn't really appeal. Yet the X670 version of the ACE is over £700, and nobody in their right mind would pay that for a motherboard. That paired with the rumours about how good Zen 5 is going to be swayed me to stay where I am for now. I'll just keep an eye out for any decent AM5 motherboards on clearance once the new range comes out. The value of older AM4 ones dropped like a stone over time.

Makes sense. I will say I have an X570 Aorus Master and now a B650 Gaming X AX and I don't feel any worse off. It depends on your use but I think I bought a lot of features I never use on the Aorus Master, it is a very nice bit of kit though.

5800X3d is always an option! I sold my 5900X and went with a 5800X3D, should get me to the next generation quite happily... Running with a 3080 and made a big difference going from 5900x to 5800X3D!

Currently got a ryzen 9 3900x and a 2080 super graphics card, would i get away with going 5800x3d and say the upcoming 4080 super graphics card to give me a boost in gaming, or would there be a bottleneck between the 5800x3d and 4080. Got this PC just before covid hit the first time, super glad i did because prices then went haywire and im now looking to upgrade

What resolution are you playing at?

At 165Hz / 1440p then I would think the 5800X3D would make a big difference over your 3900x.

I'm not 100% whether it would bottleneck the 4080 too much, but others will reply I'm sure. :)

I'm quite close to making a decision with this. I could sell my 5900x and pick up a new 5800x3d for around £100 outlay.

Or, I could do the upgrade to AM5 but I'd like longevity to upgrade the CPU as we progress through the refresh cycles. How does this shopping list look? There seems to be loads of choice for DDR5 but I'm not sure which set the 7800x3d would be best compatible with?

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £777.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

£140 (incl. VAT)
£120 (incl. VAT)
£320 (incl. VAT)
£270 (incl. VAT)
That's a nice enough board but if you are looking at future upgrades the Asus ROG Strix B650E-E makes more sense as it has a pci-e 5.0 gpu slot and pci-e 5.0 M2 support. I have been swaying back and forth on a similar upgrade myself using the 7800x3d, the Asus board and 6400mhz C34 DDR5 but am trying to wait for the new releases around April hopefully.

Why is 6400mhz better rated RAM for AM5, is that the suggested or your personal preference?

Same here, I keep switching between upgrading and not upgrading, but think I’ll wait to see what they bring. A pcie5 is a good shout for future longevity.
