got a 780ti running at 1080p
got hold of a very cheap 290 tri x

which is the better card nowadays for 1080p ?

I don't think there's much in it in terms of fps but I'd lean towards the 290x.

Guys - Wedrum is referring to a 290, not a 290X - still sticking with the 290 recommendation?

I would go for the 290 of the two if I had the choice. The 780ti was originally quicker, if memory serves, but driver improvements have closed that gap. With the extra gig of memory and the GCN architecture so far proving better suited to DX12/Vulkan than Kepler, I would go for the 290.

The only exception is if you spend a lot of time on games that support GPU PhysX (which sadly isn't many) or you have a particular program that would benefit from CUDA and doesn't support OpenCL. To be fair, if neither of these mean anything to you - you don't need them! :D

Ah, still, I would take a 290 over a 780ti (assuming he is able to get it for £50 or less or/and plans on keeping whatever for at least another year....). As you said, originally, it was quicker but over the last year in a lot of games, especially dx 12 titles, the 290 has beaten a 780ti.

Can you name any dx12 only titles? ;)

It does not have to be DX12 only titles, if it does better than the other card when in DX12 mode and out does the other card that runs best in DX11 then it does not matter if a title is DX12 only or not.
no one has said anything about an AMD card is better only in titles that are DX12 only so your comment is moot.

Tough call but for longevity and DX12 / Vulkan i would say the 290 even if its a none X.

done a heaven benchmark
780ti seems to be ahead.
both cards overclocked as far as they can stable.

Unigine is not a game, its an ancient benchmarking app that favours Nvidia, the fact that they are actually this close in Unigine just shows there is probably nothing between them in actual modern games.

The 290 is even beating the 780ti in most of the dx 11 only titles this year too...

Regarding dx 12, there are quite a few games with dx 12 support now, which bring a significant boost to AMD cards and more dx 12 support/titles will come with time just as has happened with every dx version before it.

Don't think I have ran a benchmark in years now, they have to be the most pointless thing for gauging performance in gaming especially when a lot of games are so poorly optimised for PC these days.
