Hello, i've got one EVGA 780ti SC 3Gb, I was in two minds to sell and get a pair of 980's, but that would be a sidegrade rather than an upgrade.

The question is, i've been looking at getting another 780ti SC, but can't find one (yet) what would happen if I paired it with a 780ti standard clock?

would my existing card run slighlty slower, new card automatically OC or would there be problems?

thanks for your input.

Both cards will run at their own separate core clocks. Get this with my 780's in sig, faster card in the top slot.

That's not how I understand it. I understood that SLI would make the two run in step at the slower card's clock. I'm sure I read it somewhere... I'll try to dig it out.

My top card does 1124 boost, bottom does 1097. Memory on both at 3005mhz. One is a rev2, other a rev1 wf. My 670's were similar.

A pair of 980's isn't a sidegrade from one 780 - is it?

Anyway the advantage of the 980 route would be an increase in VRAM, SLI doesn't increase the 3GB you have to 6 if you add another one.

If you wait a bit there's rumour of an 8GB 980 soon.

Andi.

No, i was thinking of going 780ti SLI against 980's in SLI. I've looked at some comparisons and there's nothing in it really (some sites measure the 980's as 5% faster and some say the 780ti's are 5% faster). 3Gb is fine for now and near future, power isn't an issue either as i've got an Enermax 1250w sitting idle.
I knew in the past that the clocks had to match and didn't know that they can be different now, still don't like the sound of that though.
If I get another 2nd hand EVGA 780ti with the same blower cooler (which makes it asthetically the same as the SC) I should be able to OC to the same as the SC, right?
The GPU & cooler's the same and even the mem speed, so that should be OK (?)
If i sell the 780ti SC to get a 980 what would it sell for...£250-300?
So it would cost another £150 to get a new 980 and another £450 for the 2nd 980 = £600
where as if i get a 2nd hand 780ti for £250-300, then i save £300 for the same performance.

Then it's a no brainer, really. The only areas where you'd get a bit more is -

  • If you go EVGA you can use their step up program to get the rumoured 8GB variants.
  • They have a lower TDP
  • epeen

I'd SLI the 780ti

Yes, I'm 'stuck' with 680 SLI and can't see an appropriate upgrade yet :-)

TBH, i went from the GTX580 1.5Gb to the 780ti just because of an upgrade itch and gaming at 1080p I don't see any difference.

If I knew then what I know now, i'd have probably just bought another 580 (for £100) and SLI'd it and wait another 2-3 years for 4K mainstream
