Hi guys,

was looking at MSI HD 7850 OC 1024MB vs Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB

is it really worth the extra £50 for the 2gb GIGABYTE card or am I missing something?

I am upgrading from an 8800GT 512mb so it a big jump either way! full rebuild later this year.

any thoughts would be appreciated. seems a lot more money (~45%) for a fairly minor increase

The part you're missing is the 1GB is usually £132 it's on sale atm and is the cheapest with a crap cooler. The cheapest 2GB 7850 is only £150 without being on sale and has an excellent cooler.

Either way, if you game at 1080p then it's worth it but if you have a lower res monitor probably not.

Thanks NZB,

I game at 1080p, BF3, Dishonoured, the usual sort of stuff.

2gb 7850 worth it then you reckon? I have no issues spunking £160 on a cardm just couldn't immediately see where the extra £50 went...

Definitely, i hadn't noticed they had the XT so cheap atm. It sits somewhere between the normal 7870's and a 7950.

For the same money the XT is def the one to go for of the 3. 1536 instead of 1280 cores of the regular 7870.

splendid stuff. thanks guys. I have been researching for ages but a 2nd and 3rd opinion really help.

I'll be getting that then :)

much appreciated, great community.

ta all.

Nope its a tahiti core which is used in the 7950/70 just with a ~200 less 'cores' enabled than the 7950

naw, it's a 79xx core with some shaders disabled, using a 256-bit memory bus like the 78xx series. the lower memory bus is compensated with 1500mhz ram, which is the same as used on 7970 ghz editions. so it's got better ram chips but a smaller ram bus than vanilla 79xx cards.

Yeah, I was about to say that...

:D

is the 7870xt a rebadged 6970?

7870XT is basically a 7970 with 25% of the shaders disabled, and 1/3rd of its memory and bus removed.

The 7870 naming is a bit of a misnomer, it should have really been called a 7930 IMHO.

Anywho, the 7870XT is a superb card from what I've seen so far, overclocks nicely, the cooler is great, and it runs very quiet. :)

I've just been looking at that XT card as my old 8800 needs replacing.

How powerful a PSU would that 7870XT need? And are other manufacturers going to produce such cards?

Cheers.

Edit: did some searching and found the answers!
