7850 or 570?

Though the 7850 has a lower power draw and runs quite a bit cooler, Giving lots of headroom to OC. Both cards overclocked, The 7850 wins.

Yes I totally agree on the lower power draw (very good buying point) but cooler implying 'lots' of OC headroom is not necessarily true.

I'll search the forums to see what OC to expect as I'm not seeing the great OC that everyone is implying ;)

depends if you get a good clocking 7850,some are poor clockers but even those should do 1100mhz on the core

Which brings me nicely to the question ....

" Which 7850 ? " :D

id go for one with an aftermarket non ref cooler, when it comes to brands/oc potential they are all the same really,msi/sapphire/his ect

only thing that clinched it for me was msi have 3 year warranty, only 2 year on other brands, just weigh up the price and see whats best for you

im happy with my msi 7850

Just to turn the question on its head. What's the worst minimum OC expected from a 7850?

Somebody told me that even the poorest 7850 OC is going to be par with a good 570 OC so its a no risk gamble to get a 7850 instead of the 570 at such similar price. True or not?

Nahhh that's BS.... I know there are a lot of 7850 fan bois in this thread but all the the benchmarks that I've been looking at read the same ... Namely the 570 is ahead, the only way to wipe the floor with the 570 is to get a 1200+ OC on the 7850.

I think the worst OC on the 7850 is going to be around 1050.

The other big advantage of the 7850 is the power consumption.... I'm sticking around for the 660 if it's not released then it's a 570 for me

Pretty much every 7850 can do 1050 on stock volts.

So thats the absolute worst OC you could get if the card was utterly utterly terrible.

Most however do around 1150 core with a volt bump. Good ones do 1200+

Just make sure you get a card with a decent cooler on it, don't go for the el cheapo VTX, as you'll end up wishing you'd gone for a card with a better cooler, or end up having to fork out for a 3rd party cooler and ruining your warranty.

Just go for an MSI/Sapphire/HIS from the start.

Not entirely true.

A stock 7850 will match a 570 in a lot of games, in other more nvidia friendly games the 570 will pull ahead (things like BF3).

A 7850 at 1050 core will beat a stock 570 in everything, while using considerably less power, running far cooler, and having more memory.

A 7850 at 1200 core will match/beat an oc'd 570/stock 580 in everything, while having the benefits listed above.

The 7850 is an all round better card.

Has Gibbo hinted anything yet as the few other sites that mention the GTX 660 release dates looks dodgy ...

Gibbo hasn't hinted at anything yet. I would have hoped that NVIDIA released the GTX660ti asap because unless you're an NVIDIA fan the 7850 beats the 560ti and 570 hands down and comes very close to the 580.

I know that there are some people who are having trouble overclocking their cards, but the majority of us have reached 1200 core and overclocking is always a gamble.

If the GTX580 was at £200 then only then would I have gone NVIDIA.

7850.

Got the Sapphire and it's flawless. Can't hear it under load, and runs cool. It's simply a better card than the 570. Best card I ever owned by a mile, and this is coming from a guy who had to be dragged screaming over to ATI.

Someone who can see things for how they are and says things how they are.
Well put.

Thanks for the heads up. BTW, Gibbo was selling some GTX580 for £200 a few weeks back. I don't get paid until a few days later. By then they were all gone :( I missed out big time ...

My 7850 runs 1200Mhz no bother, temps are very good and its quiet (unlike my case fans :) ) If you look at the 7850 overclocking thread there aren't may people who can't get 1100Mhz at the very least and lots of people are running at 1200Mhz 24/7 without any issues.

Who knows what 660 will bring though I guess.
