Just wondering whether i can get away with upgrading my graphics card to a 7850 or similar without bottlenecking my system.
Or do i really need to spend more and upgrade my system to get the most out of one.

Current spec
AMD Phenom IIx4 955 Black edition
4gb DDR3
Asus M4A785TD-VEVO
Corsair HX520W
Sapphire 512mb HD4870
Coolermaste elite 335

Thanks for any feedback

Its going to bottleneck some but will be ok. You will be a pretty big bump to be sure in performance. Look at it this way. Your not gonna loose anything and will have some to gain if you do a rebuild of the rest down the road.

True. What components will be bottlenecked? CPU and ram? Will my psu cope with one of these cards?

Thanks

your psu will be fine, they use little power

if you do move to 8gb of ram remember to upgrade to a 64bit operating system to make use of it,32 bit windows can only use 3.5gb

The Phenom II x4 will not bottleneck a 7850, they are good for each-other but if you plan on going higher than that i would suggest you upgrade the CPU.

For a 7850 its absolutely fine, you will also see a big gain from the 4870

Don't really know much about AMD CPUs but you could benefit from moving to 8GB of RAM as well.

Noted- could look at upgrading this,

Great- im not interested in sli combos so would only be the 1 card so thats good news

Currently using windows 7 home 64 bit, so thats ok.

Great thanks for your response.

Its not something i have ever had a go at.

Im busy in another thread adding some additional cooling to my case, as the stock fan is going mad when gaming currently.

So once iv upgraded the cooling side of things, its perhaps something i could look at, if its going to get a bit more performance out of a new gpu, maybe its worthwhile.
