Evening All,

Long time reader but first time poster :)

As the title suggest I am looking to upgrade my 7870 XT, I have just purchased a new 27 inch 2560 x 1440 monitor and as expected my GPU is struggling.

Ideally I would like to play games at 2560 x 1440 getting around 60fps on at least high settings.

I am guessing most suggestions will be a 780 gtx or a 290x but I would also like to know if I purchased another 7870 XT (much cheaper) would I get the results I'm looking for with crossfire?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't think you will.

For 1440p, you should be looking at 7950 Xfire or single 780 at least?

2x 280x (which is an improved version of the 7970 GHz edition) perform on average 10% better than a 780ti, at 1080p. I expect the difference to be the same at 1440p. Using this logic, a 290x would perform about the same as 2x 280x. This proves how much graphics cards have evolved during the last year.

In terms of what FPS you can expect from 2x7870 XT, Crossfire on these cards achieves between 70% - 100% scaling, assuming no issues. So multiply the FPS you are getting now at 1440p by 1.7 - 2, and see what FPS you get.

I believe you can just about get 30 FPS on 1440p with dual 7870s, but you might run into driver issues.

You also need to factor in power supply factors. What PSU are you running right now ?

Thanks for your reply.
I thought I would get more than that from xfire but what do I know
Looks like I will be buying a new GPU, but which one, will a 290 be OK at 1440p or will I need a 290X.

My PSU is 650 watts.

R9 290 is fine, its only a 5% difference.
