I am thinking of upgrading my 6870CF to a new card (s). Now I am looking at the 7970. But looking at the 7870XT in CF for the same price as a 7970 with the 3000 stream processors, should be faster than the 7970.

I know the memory bus is only 256 vs 384 and its 2Gb over 3Gb, but wont the higher number of stream processors make up for those deficits.

I came @ 1080p on a 23" screen, and cant see upgrading the screen for a while.

So what's your thoughts.

7970, probably higher minimums than the twin XT's, zero scaling/performance/smoothness/CrossFire profile issues too-basically easy to live with.

XT's will give higher max fps but more work involved, less vram/memory bus may/may not become an issue@1080p.

CrossFire/SLi isn't an install and forget solution, there can be a lot of work involved, read up as much as you can if you are thinking of taking the plunge.

I upgraded from the same setup as yourself, to a gigabyte 7970 ghz edition.
My advice would be to go with the 7970, if you can something like the MSI OC as it voltage unlocked and overclocks like a beast.
Crossfire would be more powerful but i think it would be pointless for 1080p gaming and while for the most part crossfire is now problem free, one powerful card imo is always better and gives less issues.
I noticed a big difference coming from my highly overclocked CF6870s in MIN/AVERAGE and max fps and games feel so much smoother than they did.
