Ok, so my mate up in Brighton just offered me a pretty nice deal I think, he wants my 8800 GTS 320mb and spare E6300 I have, in return he will give me a 7900 GX2 XFX and his asetek waterchill cpu kit, I think it seems like a great offer considering I have xp installed (i hate vista!!) so i am sticking to dx9 for now. What do you guys think? Overclocked E6600 and 7900GX2, or stock E6600 and 8800GTS 320??

Agreed. The 7900GX2 was a bit of a half baked card and iirc has a very limited set of drivers that actually function well. It's terribly long, consumes a lot of space and most of the 7900GX2's went to OEM Brands like Dell rather than Retail. The 8800GTS 320mb will perform better than the GX2 in most cases. If not, the GTS will perform a lot more consistently with various games as it doesn't have to rely on SLI.

I'd probably say you'd be losing out on the deal there. Don't forget that your E6600 will still overclock well on a cheap heatpipe cooler anyway. All in all, don't bother. E6600 + GTS.

I should probably post this problem in another thread but whilst I am here i might ask if there is anything i can do about the severe convex problem with my processor, this is why i cant overclock :(

If you mean the heat spreader covering the prozzie itself is concave (curves inwards), then you can lap it to make it flat. All you do is rub it down with emery cloth, using progressively finer paper until the surface is flat. Obviously you do this carefully so as not to remove to much material. Also, I wouldn't worry too much trying to get a shiny finish, what your after is as flat possible with no deep scratches, though there are ppl here who would say its worth it, I reckon its far more important to get the surface flat. I used 320 grit, followed by 800, then 1200 and I lowered me temps quite a bit. :)

He wants a 8800GTS AND a Conroe chip in exchange for his 7900GX2?! Yeah, sounds like a nice deal, for him!

Although I suppose if you really want a watercooling setup it may be worth considering.

Um, stick with the 8800. Your mate is trying to rip you off by playing on your lack of understanding with regards direct x.

Also, clock the hell out of that e6600 anyway. I've got mine at 3.6Ghz on air, and a friend has one at 3.3Ghz on stock volts with the stock cooler.

edit - wrt 'convex' problem... The water cooling will not help this. You could take off the heatspreader (risky), or you could carefully file down the heatspreader until it is flat.

problem is i am on zalman 9500 atm and temps are still high, it has been fitted and refitted over and over, and on stock i idle at 45c!! no chance of oc, thermal paste is as5 and is at right amount :( mabye i should auction my E6600 and go for another chip?

If its a 7950GX2 then thats one thing... if its the 7900GX2 then avoid - even tho they are basically the same thing spec wise the 7900GX2 has some horrible performance issues - not to mention being huge and running hot.

would think a CNPS9500 would be fine for E6600, i mean hell my E6750 did 3.4Ghz on stock cooling never mind a zalman which 99% of the time beat the hell out of stock coolers

I use a CNPS9500 on my C2Q at 3.4.. temps are stable under load around 50. I had it at 3.6, but temps were getting a bit much for my liking so when I'm not pushing for a benchmark i usually bring it back down.

3.6gig on my E6600 needs a LOT of voltage :( 1.558 or there abouts - with a lapped IHS and lapped ACF7 pro I get 42-45C idle temps and 55-58C load temps with the odd spike to 67C in orthos. Been running like that since juts after release - tough little beasts.
