I didn't really want to go over 600 quid with my new spec.

I'm trying to decide which gfx card to go for. Going for the 7900gs would save me around 30 quid, making my rig around £580. 7950gt would make it about £622.

Is there much difference performance wise? I read that the gs is a good bang for buck card and performs well.

The difference in price isnt huge & neither is the difference in performance. If you have a steadfast budget, then stick to it the 7900GS cards offer good performance for the money & overclock well genrally too.

You could also have a look at the X1900GT or better yet X1950pro cards which are in your price range but offer more performance than the 7900GS cards.

The 7950GT is no doubt a better card. It has faster core and memory clocks as well as more pixel pipelines.

The 7900GS is a great card for the money but at higher resolutions (1280x1024 and above) as well as with more eyecandy turned on (AA, AF) the 7950GT will do significantly better.

Whether those things justify the higher price or not is up to you.

......and as stated above the x1900gt is great, as is the x1950xt.

I can recommend an OCuk Galaxy 7900 GS. Bought one a couple of weeks ago and pretty pleased with it. Pretty good value for money and decent overclocking headroom, should you want.

Should be able to, depends what res your gaming at really, and its a cracking card, very slight overclock and its an XTX with half the Ram.

Welcome to the forums btw. :)

Yeah, im tempted to possibly wait till after new year and see if the prices drop with the new DX10 cards coming out etc. It's probably the wrong time to upgrade right now with the cycle just coming to the end.

Thanks ;)

7950gt is ok, not overly impressed with doesnt seem to oc very well, wish id bought the x1950, i reckon the more pipes make all the difference, but im waiting till new year and getting 8800 gts i reckon so id say get the 7900gs to tie you over and save money till the new year

stinka

I'm pretty pleased with my 7950GT, it was pretty hard to get a decent setup out of it- it became stable without artifacting, which is a new one by me, but I replaced the thermal compound (I bought the one that comes with the Zalman cooler from OC, can't recommend it, if you want a good cooler get one with the reference fan then replace it as this ain't a great example) and rigged an intake fan pointing directly at the board and I got better results.

I've not really ramped it up as yet, though. probably will when i go back to Oblivion, Dawn of War just doesn't need it and that's what I'm wasting my time on just now.

Have to say, though, if I was buying again today I'd probably go with an ATI- I had hardly any power overhead at the time so I went with the nVidia.
