I recently purchased a 7900GS off of the MM and it arrived today. The first thing I noticed was that it had a bend in one corner. This could be due to the fact that is was only wrapped in bubble wrap and wasn't even in a box! I was honestly surprised when it worked at all.
I tested it and it seemed to be working in med2:tw then I noticed some polygons not drawing and then the menu got screwed up. I'm sure everyones seen it themselves. I tried Lost coast benchmark and the screen was a mess. The card wasn't overheating so I assumed it was a driver issue as I hadn't cleaned the drivers fully before reinstalling them (even tho I went from 7600GT to 7900GS so nVidia drivers for both). I uninstalled the drivers, restarted, DriverCleaned for nVidia and nVidia WDM(??) then reinstalled and still got the problems.
I thought then that it could be a power issue. I have an Antec TruepowerII 550W so it should have been plenty for the card. However here is my power layout:
Molex lead 1: 3xIDE HDD, 1 DVD+RW.
Molex lead 2: Used to be for AGP graphics only now used for: 2x80mm fans, 1x120mm fan, 1xPCI booster fan.
The PSU comes with 2 PCI-E power cables. The first thing I did was remove the fans and place them on the "fan only" power cable from the PSU. This seemed to help as it ran the lost coast benchmark perfectly. However when I went to test in med2:tw it had the same errors though not as severe as to cause the menu to screw up.
Then I tried removing the fans completely and switching to the other PCI-E power cable. Those two games now seem to be working perfectly, med2:tw I tested for 5 minutes and lost coast went through perfect with a 19% increase over my overclocked 7600GT.
My questions are:
Do the molex leads relate to the PCI-E power leads? i.e. does 1 molex and 1 pci-e use the same 12V rail and the other molex and pci-e use the other 12V rail? If so is there any way of checking which PCI-E cable uses which? And which of the molex leads would have been drawing enough power to drain my graphics card if either?
I am now going to try and connect the fans back up to 2nd molex lead and see if I still have problems in game. By the way I was also getting random crashes from windows and freezes, I assume they were related as I didn't get them before or since I changed the power lead.
Thanks for any help you can give!
