Suddenly my 7900GT's fan has just stopped working totally.

Is there any way I can get a closer look? e.g taking the heatsink off to check in there without voiding warranty?

Or should I just go straight to RMA? :(

I'm on it now, have to shut the PC down every 5 mins or so before the temp rises too high, so I'll be on and off the forums.

I've lowered the clocks as low as they can go I can get it to about 78 degrees without it going up further.

You will need to RMA it, removing the heatsink/fan unit at all will void the warranty. :( You could always fit an aftermarket cooler, but the warranty would still be void and there's a tiny chance it's the fan controller on the board and not the fan, which would mean you wasted money.

Best to RMA.

Just remembered I bought it with another company, returned stuff there before so should be swell.

A week or so without my games....oh gosh.

If you didnt you will be lucky to get it back in 6 months.
Bit of an exaggeration there mate, no need to traumatise him. If your RMA took longer than six months then you should've pestered the manufacturer involved a little more, because they take four or six weeks on average in my experience, and that's when they take their time about it.

Alright, since I can't live without my PC I did the following.

I've stuck a 120mm powerful fan right on top of the heatsink/fan on my 7900GT,
It's currently @ 60 ish degrees which ain't half bad, so seems I can browse the net and play some low powered games at least.

When I say stuck I mean I've got some little bits and bobs (Polos the mints) that the fan is resting on.

Edit: On a game now with this spare fan, 73-71 degrees, Yay it will be fine till I get replacement next week :D

You placed the new fan ontop of the old one with polo mints? That is absolutely legendary! :D
Yep got some Polo's stacked for the fan to sit on so it can reach the card so it's sucking air from it perfectly.

Gotta keep my eyes on it though, if it falls off while I'm asleep I'm screwed so gona turn the PC off when asleep till I get my replacement :p

Hovers at around 68-76 while on World of Warcraft at least, I'd guess F.E.A.R would be late 70's early 80's but still fine temps for now, gona move the fan up closer to the graphics card tomorrow so even lower temps tomorrow.

Nah I didn't alt tab out, I play in Windowed mode so I put the Firefox window partly over the game, the game was still being rendered just had the browser in a small box on top of it, could see everything that was happening on the game.

Still around 69-73 max it seems. (this is overclocked also)

If the fan controller is dead on card, then surely there's a way round that? Sure i had an old Ti4200 few years back the exact above happend and i got round this problem with some adaptor i purchased for something like £4 to which i ran the fan via the PSU.
