7900GTO Problem

Hey guys

I've having problems with a system I built recently. Core spec as follows

ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard
Core2Duo E6600 CPU
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R PSU
And of course, an MSI 7900GTO graphics card.

When I built the system it booted fine and I began installing software, however when it got round to it's first reboot that was it, no video output. The system beeped with 1 long beep and 3 short - no graphics card. Further reboots did not resolve the problem.

The next day after leaving the system powered off at the plug all night boot up was successful. The first thing I did at this stage was to upgrade the BIOS. Everything looked as if it was OK for a while and I get an OS installed, then suddenly while browsing the system reboots. On boot again there is no video output and it beeps as before. Reboot doesn't resolve.

The following day was a Saturday, again it boots OK after a night powered off and I actually managed to get some gaming in with no problems, however after heading out and leaving system idle for a time I come back to find blanks screens yet again.

SHould point out that when this happens and there is no video output the system is working fine. I can get access via remote desktop and everything is ok (and very fast)

So, I described the problem to OCUK and they initiated an RMA on the GTO. Before I sent it back I managed to get it tested in a system in work which worked... for about 20 minutes, then the usual no video output. The only difference was reboot seemed to solve the problem.

I went away with work for a week, come back and there's a GTO waiting for me. There is no note or anything in the box so I assume it's a straight replacement. I run home eagerly to get gaming however when I open the now very damaged box the contents look overly familiar, it's the same card back... I try installing it anyway, maybe they have flashed it or fixed a loose connection but no, still the same

So, we get to now. I have tested the card in a friends system with the same results and I have tested 2 other cards in my system with absolutely no problems. I am not getting any response from the support staff and I'm totally out of ideas.

Please can somebody give me some suggestions as to what I can try next?

Thanks

first thing that comes to mind is power supply problems, but if it is doing same thing in other machines i guess it must be the card, calling ocuk again is probably your best bet

When new builds go wrong, it's such an annoyance to find the motivation to fix the problem, especially if you don't know what it is.

Here's to hoping you get it sorted ASAP. Got my 7900 GTO this morning and it's the best card (bang for ya buck) i've bought so far.

I couldn't stand the 6800, but the 7900 series really seems to of done nVidia justice. As for all the driver talk, the Geforce drivers are so much nicer than the ATi ones.

(Voodoo Banshee! :D, 9700NP, 9800PRO, 6800NU, X800XT)

Unfortunately I don't have another PSU with 24pin connector to test with.

I just can't see how it's not the graphics card, and yet another day goes by with no response from support.

Send them a letter. Sadly sometimes the only way to get things done is to escalate the situation. Let them know that for every minute you are put out because of them selling a faulty product and not dealing with the return properly and promptly, you'll expect compensation. If you use a polite webnote or telephone conversation the chances are you'll get a slightly less polite fobbing off. That's been my experiance with my only 2 RMAs. If I hadn't escalated it in writing I simply wouldn't have been treated fairly.

PS Sorry OcUk. But until you sort these types of things out then you'll end up with more and more loyal customers feeling obliged to offer this type of advice to other people who've had problems.
