7900GTO PSU Question

I have just received a 7900GTO which looks very nice indeed. I tried installing it but my PC just won't manage to boot...I get to the windows loading blue screen before the login page and it just seems to hang.

I have a 450W PSU with what seems to be 2 12V rails. 1x17w and 1x18w. The card is looking for 22w on the 12v rail. I don't really understand this whole "rails" malarky. Is the PSU just too weedy for the card and if so I assume that is what is causing the boot problems?

Is there any way to join the rails together to get this thing started?

Hi

Welcome to the boards!
You need a decent branded psu otherwise i wont cut it! What have you got?

Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel
(CA-022-AK)

Price: £36.99 (£43.46 Including VAT at 17.5%)

This PSU (for example) should be quite capable - well worth the investment to take advantage of such a good graphics card.
It's worth investing in a decent branded PSU becuase it can easily last seval system upgrades. Seasonic, Tagen, Corsair, FSP are also great PSU's.
In the long run, I think stupidly power hungry graphics cards ( of which the 7900GTO is not an example) will be a thing of the past. Every other part of the system is moving towards more efficient power usage - I expect it's just a matter of time until Graphics cards fall into line.

I think you mean you have a plit 12v rail with 1x17Amp and 1x18Amp.
It can easily make up the

450W is ample for a GTo, the GTX(GTo is based on GTX) draws less then 100W nominal, so with the 75W available from the PCIe slot itself and then the additional PCIE connector your PSU is ample.

What graphics card have you changed it from ?

Also you can try to load into Safemode, press F8 just after the POST screen(BIOS Screen) and select Windows Safe mode.

A little more information will help though, but your PSU is good enough as it sounds likely to be an ATX2.01 at least

I'm running 2 7900GTO's on the Akasa SilentPower 460W with 6 HDD in RAID 5 and 2 optical drives with no problems whatsoever. I'm quietly pleased. It also really is silent.

The PSU is a pretty crappy model built by a company I have never come across before. I am in the office at the moment but I am sure it is something like HEC. I tried googling and couldn't find any refererence to them.

Arghhh...I am trying frantically to find somewhere I can get a new PSU today...I don't want to wait until monday so I can use my new card...

If OCUK don't do it then no-one on the forum should/will point you to a competitor. To find out why please read the forum rules.

OCUK do do Saturday delivery!

Eesh...just checked £18.25 for saturday delivery....arghhh

Just did some checking and the PSU I have is a HEC 450W PSU.

Anyone know anything about these? Should it be able to power my 7900GTO? I have a Asus-AN8e Mobo with 1GB of RAM. 2 SATA hard drives and all powered by an Athlon64 3500+

Like its been suggested before, try booting windows into safe mode and ensuring the graphics drivers are functioning and set correcty. It seems to me by the way you explain it it will be a windows driver issue.
