7900GTX OC should be faster?

Hey, I've just jumped from a 7800gtx 256 to a 7900 gtx oc 512 and it's not much faster on benchmarks.

It has more juice cos it powers through areas of lost coast that used to chug a little but it seems maxed at the same frame rate. Both cards get 114fps in the cs: source stress test for example. Wheras my X1800 XT 512 i had at the start of the year used to reach 154. (tho that was in xp pro, surely x64 doesnt take that much of a performance hit?)

The driver settings are on default and application controls apart from transparent multisampling and tripple buffer is on. im running the recently released new forcewares. and my system is x64, p4 3.8ghz 4gig ddr duel chanel ram with a raptor boot drive and games installed on a raid array. I run the game in 1440x900 with x-fi elite pro on gaming mode.

Its a week old install of x64 so its pretty fresh. Can anyone give me any clues as to whats holding things back? I was expecting faster frame rates then the x1800 at least...

You have a botle neck somewhere then as i have a 7900GTX 512 also and for me on CS:S i get over 200 fps!!!!

It must be something to do with the X64 drivers, these are known not to be very compatible with everything yet.

thanks for that.. If i get time over weekend i might put a ghost i have of xp back on just to confirm. I was just getting used to x64 as well - I thought performace was meant to be similar if not better then x86?

Does anyone know if earlier x64 drivers are as crippled. would an earlier version have more speed??

Just an additional thought. I have it set too 'multiple display' in the drivers as opposed to 'single display' options as i run two monitors.

Could that be holing it back? I'm just downloading 91.28 for x64, ill try then and see if there any faster.

No, that shouldn't make any difference. Mine's set to that too. Shame it's not something that simple (unless the X64 drivers are really buggy - it's worth a look I suppose)

I wouldnt say p4's are that bad, It certainly beat out my 3200+ owning friend when we had similar spec pcs lol. Anyway, I got 150+fps in source on an x1800xt and with the 7900GTX being a step up from that i'd figure i'd get more.. not less.

maybe.. but surely not 40% better? besides both the 7800gtx 256 and the 7900gtx 512 are maxing out at 114.. which means something is up somewhere?

Ok, put on a ghosted installation of xp media centre and the 91.33 drivers and i definitley have a cieling limit of around 114fps.

whether its 144x900 with 4xaa 16xaf and everything on full.. running 1024x768 with no aa/af ...in fact 1440x900 ran faster at around 116.

Any idea what could be causing it? It can't be my p4 surely? like i said I know ati may be a little faster but i refuse to believe a last gen ati card (x1800) can be nearly 50% faster (150+fps)

It occured to me it might be the power supply. The 7900GTX needing a Minium 400w with a 12v current rating of 26a or more.

I unhooked all the hard drives and fans in my system to see if it would make a difference and it did.. i went from 114 to 129.. which was a little weird.

Looking at my power supply its a Qtechnology 400w with
+3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 +12V +5Vsb
30A 28A 14A 15A 0.5A 2A

So im guessing i dont meet the minium requirements??

I put in a power supply from another pc now which is..
+3.3V +5V +12V -5V -12V +5Vsb
28A 35A 30A 0.5A 0.8A 2.5A

And things are still running the same even tho the 2nd one has a higher ampage on the +12V - can anyone decipher this for me please? It's like trying to understand a foreign language? :)

a qtech PSU is kinda of like having an unexploded bomb in your PC.

Some people claim they have had no problems, yet others claim that they blew their entire rig... my advice, grab something like a Tagan or an Antec PSU.

Ok, my apologies to the poster above. It does indeed look like my P4 is limiting things and the ATI card must have just worked with it better.

Using 3Dmark I compared my system to others with a p4 and a GTX and I actually came out a little better then them by a few hundred points.
