7900GTX Temps?

I'm planning on overclocking my Geforce 7900GTX soon and I just wanted to check what kind of temperatures I should expect. At the moment I'm getting 50C at Idle and 68C under load when ATI Tool is scanning for artifacts. Are these ok? They're with the stock cooler by the way. What kind of clocks and temps should I be getting when I start overclocking?

Thanks

Those temperatures are perfectly fine. When you overclock idle temperatures wont change but load will probably go up by a few degrees depending how far you overclock. 68C is well within its limits of 100C+ ;)

I would imagine 670/700 by 1700/1800

The stock cooler is very good. Changing it to a different cooler will probably make temperatures worse!

Don't worry about it the Stock cooler will handle the temps before the core or ram flake out.

The cooler is one of the best stock coolers available and adding a zalman for instance will not get you better clocks.

So far so good, I'm at 680/1700 and the temps aren't going past 70C :) This really is a great cooler. Is running the artifact scanner on ATI Tool the best thing to do to test for stability? I'm hoping artifact scanning works fine with Nvidia cards as well as ATI ones.

Apparently its best to do a few loops of 3dmark06 and the DeepFreeze section is a good tester for artifacts

I am about to overclock my 2 7900GTXs. Already clocked my 3800x2 AM2 to 2.52GHz. Aido... what cooler are u using for your CPU? [Sorry to change the subject just that Aido has a very similar looking setup to me.]

I assume rivatuner has an artifact scanner? Anyhow I am off to download 3dMark06 and rivatuner/coolbits. Will let you know how I get on.

Yeah My idle temps are 50C and 42C for both cards. Difference is probably due to lack of air space/room by the fan due to an extra PCIe card (TV TUNER) sitting between my SLI cards!!! Not ideal so I may not expect much overclocking from this setup.

Aido... I would reduce the size of your sig to 4 lines (the Forum mods are strict in here!!!). They gave me a formal warning for using 5tiny text lines which I thought was rather harsh!!! Guess rules are rules!

I'm using a Zalman CNPS9500-AM2, it was the only AM2 cooler available when I bought my system. I heard a lot of good things about it before I bought it, but I'm not that impressed with it. I get temps of 57-60 degrees under load at 2.6GHz and 1.45V, which seems pretty high to me. My overclock's completely stable though, so I suppose I can't complain too much.

I thought it was 4 lines already

Your temperatures are normal, pretty good for SLI really. They should overclock well but all cards will clock differently theres no way too tell if they will or not though without trying it out :p

Last time i used rivatuner it didnt have an artifact scanner at all. You could use ATi tool which works though

His sig is 4 lines of text here 1680x1050 fine!

BAD BAD NEWS!!!!! .... I ran 3dMark06 and passed but at a low score of 6500ish. Realised quite quickly SLi was not setup properly and then activated SLi mode. Running 3dMark06 in SLi things became unstable and got loads of Tearing/flickering in Canyon Flight and Deep Freeze. This was having undertaken NO overclocking just running at stock. So opened the case and tested each card seperately on its own. 1 worked fine but the 2nd did not became unstable/corrupted image in both CPU tests and crashed the system (reset it) in the Deep Freeze section. Ran a few times with 3dMark06 sometimes completing on the "Faulty card" with a lower score of 5500 or so but left me with an unstable/corrupted desktop.

Anyhow I am now narked!!!! .... Just sent an RMA request but since its been 3months since purchase I may end up with a repair/replacement under warranty. I hope the company are ok with custumer service as I cannot see anyway of RMA(ing) this card to ASUS directly.

Are problems like this common???? I have been super unlucky with this build!!!!! (Memory incompatibility/USB problems/TV card technical problems!!)

Anyhow no overclocking for me for the next few weeks.

[as for the sig... more than 4lines on my screen but I guess it's probably some setting I've got turned on somewhere, if it's 4lines on other peoples' screens then don't worry about it.]

Short answer - absolutely.

Longer answer - RMA the card, brook no BS about the card not being faulty, eventually you will get a later revision version that works. But it may take two or three goes.

Oh dear... Yet another dodgy 7900GTX :( I had to RMA two cards before I finally got one that worked. They're great when they work, but they do have a scarily high failure rate. jpe20, as long as you tell OcUK that you're getting corruption in the Deep freeze test they should have no problem with replacing your cards. It's a really common issue for the 7900GTX series unfortunately.

Could I have damaged the card myself???? The only thing I can think of is the PCIexpress clock setting (IN BIOS). I have tried setting it manually to 100MHz but the system won't boot/POST leaving it on AUTO seems to do the trick but is it setting it to a too high a level that the card cannot cope with on AUTO???

Aido.... what PCIe clock speed have you set in BIOS (under JumperFree settings sub-menu). I assume you've left yours on AUTO like me??? I would prefer to fix it really but have not yet found anything stable.

Just run 3dMark06 on my single working card at stock speed ... no apparent problems no corruption etc I get 5969. Sounds about right I think for a single card?

I did not get the cards from OcUK I am afraid!!! Bought bits and pieces here and there!!! Some from OcUK though.

I doubt it's anything you've done if you haven't overclocked anything. The motherboard and graphics card are able to handle a PCIe bus speed of 125MHz anyway, since the linkboost function they support overclocks it to that level. I've got mine on Auto and it works perfectly.

I get 6,067 with my overclocked CPU in 3dMark06, so your score sounds fine.
