Hey guys,

I done a benckmark of COD BO6 in game, and even thoough i was getting decent results, my CPU bottneck was 89% and the GPU 11%

Now, my 7900X is in "eco mode" of 105W from its "standard" 170W. Could this affect the bottleneck on teh CPU, as its basically cutting perfornance in teh eco mode???

For reference, I have a 4080 Super.

It’s almost certainly the Nvidia driver. It’s really poor at balancing work across cores and ends up offloading excessive amounts of work to a few threads on a single CCD. RTX 3080~ or faster = X3D in Nvidia land.

From memory Eco modes on the 79xx CPU's really only impact all core load scenarios as there isn't enough power to go around. How much it impacts is software dependent but as an example your CBR23 score will be lower in Eco mode. The Single core however will be the same.

Best idea would be to run something like HWInfo and keep and eye on per core load (could also use MSI afterburner with all cores visible if the game allows it). It is possible that one core is being maxed out and that is what is holding the performance back. Assuming you are running 1440p+ on the 4080 Super any bottleneck from the CPU shouldn't be that noticeable outside of side by side comparisons (i.e. you might get 200FPS on your CPU but 225FPS on a X3D model).

If you are going to change, get an 8 or 16 core, the 7900 chips are probably two 6 core CCD's. Just looked at prices, they have increased a lot! Not a great time to buy.

yeah, tbh i might hold out, im still getting great performace, plus the hassle selling and what not.

hmm..i shouldnt be...but im eyeing up a 7900X3D :(

I would advise against this, very very difficult to get a good one, I went though about 5 or 6 before I got a decent one, and they are pretty rubbish, youve got 6 cores / 12 Threads of 3D cache for games and 6 cores 12 threads of frequency cores for everything else, your 7900X is probably better, as others have suggested get a 7800X3D or a 7950X3D, or grab a 9000 series chip.

Been looking at 7950x3d chips..wondering how much a boost this would give me for gaming and general productivity?

I wouldn't bother from 7900X, I'm on a 5950X and it's still not enough of a jump for me (but depends on whether you feel you're lacking, in which case 9800x3D is the only thing I'd consider), the most demanding games I care about run fine, even if they might run a bit better with something else!

Edit: I'd at least wait to see where 9900/9950x3D lands.. personally 9800x3D would do me for gaming, but I don't wanna lose the cores!

Yeah, I mean I’m still getting great performance, and like you I would like to keep the extra cores..

looking at the 9700x for the same use scenario it ticks lots of the right boxes while running cool as a cucumber

I have had a 7900x since day one, before all the 3d CPU's came out and since I built my son's PC last Christmas using a 7800x3d I have felt my PC would be better with a x3d chip. So I have bought a 9800x3d and should be lucky enough to be in the first wave of stock out. When I first heard about the 9000x3d chips coming out and having 3d cache on both chiplets, I had set my mind on getting a 9900x3d. But after seeing my son's 7800x3d, I thought would be more than happy losing cores to move to a 9800x3d.

how do you find your 7900X in general? Good enough for gaming?

My 7900x has served me well for two years, I only use it gaming and nothing else. Mainly play flight Sims with it like IL-sturmovik in VR with other software such as voice attack, VRfps and SteamVR
