I know there's a multitude of threads on these CPU's but I can't find an answer/opinions on this particular question.

I currently have a 7950X in one of my PCs along with a 7900XT GPU I do 95% gaming and very occasional video editing/recoding.

Would I see any benefit from upgrading to a 7900X3D for the gaming performance? (The swap wouldn't cost anything)

Wonder if the 3D cache is enough to make up for the core deficit?

I game at 1440P 165hz

Thanks
Scott

Personally not a fan of the split 2x6 CCD CPUs as they are quite hit and miss performance wise and newer games which take advantage of 8 core / 16 thread can have a little odd performance on them. You'll mainly see a benefit if gaming at 1080p with a 4090 :s maybe a small difference with a 7900XT at higher settings but personally I'd lean towards either sticking with the 7950X or spending the extra for the 7950X3D.

I know the reviews were pretty tough on these CPU's as they were too dear at launch but I would be very interested to see some performance data Vs the non x 3d 8 and 16 core cpus. I know 8 ccd x3d variants perform better in most instances but I don't know about the non x3d.

Did it anyway, it runs cooler but it's a downgrade in call of duty which is the game I play most :)

Just discovered I wasn't running my RAM at EXPO yesterday. I can confirm the performance is identical (within margin of error)

COD is not a game that leverages the 3dcache much. Its not a very complicated game under the hood. Its great for VR, and or complex games in structure so RTS, or RPG etc.

The 7900X3D will be the faster gaming cpu without doubt. I had one and compared to my 7950X3D it was at most 5% behind. 7950X was a good 15-20% behind.

I've been using a sample of 1 game to be fair. I've been running the in game benchmark and the performance is pretty much identical.

I'm sure there's plenty of examples where the 7900X3D would come out on top. The biggest win for me though is how much cooler it runs.
