7900xt - Issues with signal integrity on HDMI at 4k

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded from a 3060ti to a 7900xt Pulse and have been having some issues with display signal to my 4k TV over HDMI.

With the 3060ti I had it running from the HDMI port to my AV receiver (via 5m HDMI cable rated at 18gbps) and then out of the receiver to my TV via the ARC HDMI port. (never had issues with this set up!)
When I initially installed the 7900XT, I was having some pretty major issues with the sound cutting out, especially when the tab playing sound was not in focus.

I ordered a higher rated HDMI cable (5m, 48gbps), but this did not improve things.
I then put the HDMI from the card directly in to the TV, with sound then running to the receiver from the TV via ARC, this has fixed the sound dropping out, however I have noticed that I'm still getting very minor and infrequent issues with the picture;
Occasionally I am getting a thin black corrupted bar appearing on screen, only for a fraction of a second and often going for several hours (or even days) without it happening (or me noticing it), but other times happening multiple times in an hour.

When I first mentioned this in the Sapphire deals thread, a few people said that AMD cards are just more fussy than nvidia with cable quality and I appreciate that 5m is a bit of a long run for HDMI, however as I watch most content via PC on the TV it's not a great situation.

I would love to find a solution to this as I'm otherwise very happy with the card (performance, noise, coil whine etc.) and may have trouble returning it as I have redeemed the Starfield code to my AMD rewards account.

I don't have another 4k display to test, so far I have not noticed the issue while gaming/under load, so was wondering if it was maybe similar to the issues that used to be present with multiple/high refresh screens at idle clocks.
The only other things I can think to try are either a DP to HDMI adapter, or a fibre based HDMI cable, but I'm unsure if these are likely to be any better.....Any indication would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Yep, the picture is not currently running through the AVR, so I don't think it's that.... I also never had the issue with my previous card. I don't think it's running any enhancements anyway but I'll have a look later.
I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the port on the card/cable length, it could also be where it is running as there is also network/power and speaker wires running alongside it.

If it is that, which I'm not convinced of, can you try a shorter cable and move your PC just to test it out?

I will try to at some point, it's not easy in terms of the layout (and also the shorter cables I have are not as high rated).
I'm going away early tomorrow until Monday so unlikely I'll be able to do so until next week. In my previous experience (granted, a few years ago while working in digital signage) I'd always considered 5m to be around the upper limit for copper HDMI.

I have ordered a fibre HDMI cable which should arrive today, so will try that first. As I said before, it's sometimes fine for hours (or days) so may not see the issue recur until I'm back.

Thanks (everyone!) for your help, I'll let you know how I get on

Fibre cable went in on Wednesday last week, I didn't see any issues on the day and was then away over the weekend, but noticed yesterday I'm still having the same issue with the black bar glitch :(

Anyone got any more ideas I can try, or is it time I start talking to CS with a view to returning it for testing?
I'm a little dubious about the outcome as the issue is so infrequent so I would imagine it's going to be extremely hard to replicate....

I’m running 5m cheapish (£17) HDMI 2.1 cable with my Nvidia card without any issues at all at 40Gbps so 4K/120hz/10bit/RGB and also with PS5 but that one has less bandwidth as PS5 is max 4K/120hz/12bit/4:2:2.
Every AMD card I had in the past was giving me some display issues either black screens or in a case of RX480 hard reboots when connected to 4K tv (that was eventually resolved after many driver updates).

Edit: Actually that’s a lie as I was using integrated graphics in my Ryzen cpu temporarily when my card was being replaced and had zero issues at 40Gbps but that was on a 3m cheap HDMI 2.1 cable.

@z10m - Yeah, everything was fine with my 3060ti (and 1070 before that)...

I'll check but I'm pretty sure I'm running YCbCr 8bpc, I noticed yesterday that the control panel allows me to select 10 or 12bpc as well as RGB, but wasn't sure which option would be preferable (obviously anything which sorts the issue would be preferable, even if not the best colour space :p )

Edit: the TV in question is an LG 6470PLC (IPS panel, think it's only HDR400 certified)

All I can say is my Pulse 7900 XT works perfectly fine on a 20m fibreoptic cable (a Ruipro Sky Blue HDMI 2.1 48Gbps) to my living room TV.

My 4K TV is only 60 Hz though, so technically the cable and HDMI 2.1 port aren't being stretched to the max.

If you're outputting at 120 Hz, I'd suggest trying out 60 Hz and seeing if that makes a difference.

Thanks @Vexr - that goes some way to reassuring me that this may be an actual issue. My tv is also 60Hz.
I also changed to 8bpc RGB and still having the issue - When I tried selecting 10/12bpc it just changed itself back so I'm guessing my TV doesn't support it.

I guess all I can do now is start an RMA and cross my fingers that they can replicate the issue - Maybe more obvious at 4k120+

Decided to nuke the drivers with DDU yesterday and re-installed 23.7.1 as it was the latest I had downloaded (previously had updated to 23.7.2 via the adrenaline control panel).
Couldn't get it to boot to safe mode (wasn't outputting to either display!) so ran it a couple of times (for both the nVidia and AMD settings) before re-installing.

So far not noticed any issues since, will monitor for a few days and see how it goes.

Just wanted to update this.. I continued to have the same issue (an occasional flicker of about an inch high bar on the TV)...However I have recently changed my other monitor on the PC (was a DGM IPS-2701wph, now a Dell G2724D)... and the issue seems to have completely disappeared (at least after a week or 2 with the new monitor)!

I would never have suspected that the monitor would cause signal issues on the OTHER screen!
I'll try changing the cable routing back to the AV receiver at some point in the next week, and if that doesn't have the same audio drop out issues then it will 100% confirm in my mind this was the cause of the problem (although I may be better off running the GPU directly in to the TV in terms of latency)! :)
