Hi, after some advice please, which I appreciate might be a bit of a stupid request, but the last PC I built was over 20 years ago.

Whilst I’m OK in the Corporate IT space, I’m well out of the mix for home kit.

I’ve built myself a new rig for home with the idea to get into a bit of non-competitive “gaming”: Bit of MS Flight Sim and some sort of racing game, along with Office use for my wife. The only bit missing is a video card.

Currently the system has an i7-13700, Asus Prime Z790-P WIFI, with 32Gb of Kingston HyperX Fury Beast RGB and the screen is a IIYAMA G-MASTER GB3466W (3440 x 1440) all sitting inside a Lian Li O11D Evo

I’d prefer an AMD based card (what can I say, I like my CPU’s from Team Blue and my GPU’s from Team Red (Team Blue would also OK if there is sufficient grunt).

Bearing in mind that absolute FPS performance is not what I’m after - this is just to play a few games after, would an 7900XTX suffice (especially when running at 3440x1440) - It doesn’t even have to run at “Ultra quality” etc etc and I’m not aiming to be a World Champ games player . I also appreciate that I might have gone OTT with getting an Ultra Wide, but my wife is a heavy user of excel and so the screen was also brought with this in mind.

Is overheating still an issue with certain cards 7900XTX? I remember there were issues with the some of the stock coolers back in December – is this still an issue?

Thanks

Mike

Easily at that resolution, the XTX is a 4k card.

The overheating issue was only on the MBA (Mad by AMD) cards / reference models, the majority of what you can buy now are Partner cards of their own design and don't suffer from the vaporchamber fault :)

The vaporchamber issue wasn't bad design it was quality control.

So the same reference card with a to spec vaporchamber won't have the issue.

Thanks @ph123uk - good to know!

Ref the MBA - it looks like after some research, that all the MBA/Reference cards will look the same as the original AMD card, the eaiest giveaway (for me at least) is the fans, so if I'm correct anything that has different fans etc, is going to be OK?

Assuming I've got my research right, contemplating https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-1fw-gi.html

The cooler/fans are a giveaway yeah, but if it has a name then it's not a reference/mba card, so hellhound, pulse, gaming oc, they're all custom cards.

Like others have said at that res you could use a 7900xt no problem. Sapphire pulse or nitro plus are good. Red Devil is also a good shout.

I'm 3840x1600 and my XTX runs everything at Ultra its almost overkill. The Nitro like other AIB's has no issue with cooling and its almost silent in use

I have 7900xtx with Alienware 3440x1440 34DWF and it runs everything no problems. This is also an MBA card and the cooler was absolutely fine and working as expected, I took it off to put a waterblock on and the MBA vapour chamber cooler was built like a tank. It is a real shame they messed up the QC because it is a good design and like others have said the Hellhound, Pulse etc all have different, more traditional heatpipe coolers.

You can easily get away with a 7900xt at that res so shop around for the best value and the card you like the look of , I assume you want to show it off in your O11.
