As per title I’ve been toing and froing over one of these or the 7900XT and as I have no interest in playing at 4k would the XT be better suited for 1440p gaming. Lately the game I have been playing mostly is Warzone 2.

Define overkill? If it's producing FPS much higher than your monitor can display, or your CPU can handle then sure, it's overkill. Check out reviews. Only you can make that decision, really.

Yes, the 7900 XTX is more suited to 4K with the XT being a better match for 1440P. The XT will also be very fast in Warzone 2 as the game engine loves AMD GPUs. The 7900 series no longer lose performance at higher resolution now thanks to the increased bandwidth from gen 2 infinity cache.

At 1440P, no current CPU (13900K or 7950X) is able to drive the 7900 XTX to a locked 99% utilisation in Warzone 2 at 1440P, unless you use maximum settings. If you run competitive settings, the GPU will only get utilised up to around 80% or so. Not bad itself, but it shows that there is untapped potential there for when a faster CPU comes along, such as a Ryzen 7000 with VCache.

Example (note the GPU utilisation as I jump from the plane and get down to the ground)
So with an XT being 10-20% slower than the XTX, this will be less of an issue.

Thanks for the detailed response Matt. I’ll check that video out when I get home hard to see the data on the phone!
