Does all 790i only use DDR3 memory as quite keen to buy one but not so keen to change my memory got 4gb DDR2, and really don't think for what you get is worth the money for DDR3 at the moment

Found the XFX one relatively cheap and bought some cheap Corsair RAM. Basically went from 4 gigs down to 2. I'll get better RAM when the price becomes more reasonable. Just really wanted to try this board and so far bee very impressed. I updated the BIOS straight away. I bought this RAM - 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS3, DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333) 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24

bluesouljah could you help me out here mate? I will be getting an Asus 790i ultra in a couple of months and im not sure what ddr 3 memory to buy do i buy 1333, 1600 or 1800 dont really understand what speed i should be going forcould you help me out?

All DDR3 is overclocking memory at the moment due to the MAX offical FSB being 400Mhz.

So just buy the cheapest.

1333 runs at 667Mhz

1600 runs at 800Mhz

1800 runs at 900Mhz

Most motherboards will top out with a FSB of 600Mhz if your lucky although you can clock the memory to it's rated speed. What's the point in that though?

Talk in DDR speed or you will confuse him, Mobo Makers, CPU makers and Memory makers do so.

You buy DDR3 thats say 1600mhz, you can then run your Quad Pumped FSB of your CPU OC'd to 1600mhz (easy to reach) and run your Memory at 1600mhz DDR, where as its normally on current Mobo's running half your Quad Pumped FSB at 800mhz DDR.

The same would have coarse be true to simply run your CPU FSB at 1333mhz and the Memory at 1333mhz.

Not many Mobos reach 2400mhz FSB (Quad Pumped) the 790's seem to be able to and a few X48's, even 2000mhz is still a good goal.

"3 Linked and Synced baby. In every single over-clocking guide I have seen the first thing they say to do is unlink the FSB and Ram. I strongly disagree. This was a common over-clocking practice during the P4 days of the past, when the FSB was 800Mhz and anything faster than DDR 400 was tough to come by. By today’s standards that would be 1066 and DDR2 533, are any of you running DDR2 533? I didn’t think so. Even I managed to scrounge up some DDR2 800.
So linked and synced your FSB to Ram ratio will be like this…

QDR 1066 =DDR2 533
QDR 1333 =DDR2 667
QDR 1500 =DDR2 750
QDR 1600 =DDR2 800
QDR 1800 =DDR2 900
QDR 2133 =DDR2 1066

This provides what I consider a true 1:1 FSB/Ram ratio, see images below. I know this is going to upset a lot of people that bought uber fast Ram. Hear me out (or write your own guide, lol). You should be able to run your Ram at whatever speeds you want, but as many have noticed this (speeds above 1000Mhz (this may be better now that p25 is out, I'm testing)) seems to be an issue with the 680i at this time. For the sake of stability I have found this to be a better option, without sacrificing much, if any, performance. Proof is further down. "

I'm sure I read that they ( or one of them) will be releasing a DDR2 version must have got my wires crossed cheers for reply
