Hi i installed my 7950 yesterday, decided to check CCC and GPU-Z and both are saying my GPU clock is at 300 and memory clock at 150. The default is 880 for my powercolor 7950 so whats happened? why are they showing such low clocks?

More importantly how do i fix this? thanks.

If your not in 3D mode, ie gaming then its normal. my 7970 runs at those clocks when doing day to day stuff in windows and clocks up when gaming.

Cards downclock to save power when they are not in use. It will rise right back up again when you give it something to do

Man i feel stupid, i should have known this.

Off topic - When i tried to overclock in ccc by from 880 to 1000 it caused kingdoms of amular to crash (started to artifact) saying amd drivers have stopped responding, does this mean i can't overclock my card at all now?

I bought the pcs+ version so i could specifically overclock it so seeing this happen is very dissapointing.

Will increasing power control settings to 20 help at all? really would appreciate some advice.

As above check your "clocks" when in game you will see the change.

Yeah i see that now, just wondering why my 7950 wont work in games even on the smallest overtclock, i bought this on all the information that these are easy and safe to overclock, well i can tell you upping the clock by just 120 in ccc makes games artifact and crash with the display drivers stopped responding message.

If its crashing when you overclock it, it probably isn't getting enough voltage.

Download MSI Afterburner, that will let you change the voltage. Give it a bit more than default volts and then see if the overclock crashes.

ok will give it a go, thanks.

One of the reasons I hate about the new 7950 and 7970 is that people are touting them as brilliant - once overclocked!

People should be considering these cards based on stock performance, and not what they may or may not get when overclocking.

Whats to say AMD didn't make sure their first few batches were good quality chips, providing false impression that these will all clock like beasts, then roll out the less capable chips slowly? Ok, not likely, but always possible.

I hope you find the performance you were hoping for, but I do feel we are going to see a lot more of these threads in time to come.

TBH, its brilliant at stock. I can overclock mine (as per my sig) but I've not played a game yet where I feel its needed. Handy to have in reserve though should the need arise.

I have the the same PCS+ card and had to play around with it a while using the latest beta of Afterburner.

My sample had quite a low core voltage of 1.04 volts (approx).
At the moment I have it at 1000 core and 1400 memory @ 1.1 volts and after updating to the drivers out last week it seems very happy.
It will go higher as I have tested it with increased core volts but I'm happily playing BF3 on ultra settings so no need to go any higher (for me at least).

My problem only really occurred in BF3 not benching in Heaven btw.

What drivers are you using? in ccc it says im using 12.3 - Are these the correct drivers to use?

I've fried a few cards in my time by being a bit too eager with voltage increases, but yeah the silicon lottery as it's known can throw out cards that just...don't like being overclocked as much.
