7950 lovin and OC's thread

Just playing with my twin froze now, pie man did you figure out how to get afterburner to go higher than 1100? Trixx will but it won't let me increase voltages and I don't want to run two programs.

Also just got 2200 in heaven at 1100/5800, will have to check settings as that seems a bit high for those clocks.

I think shutting down and restarting when AF asked me to unlocked both the increased voltage and frequencies as it appeared all of a sudden.
that heaven score seems very high for those clocks, are you running heaven as per the instructions? are you running with Lucid enabled?
I did a high speed run last night of 1225 core, 6000 memory @ 1.25v and scored just over 2000:

One thing I've noticed and confirmed somewhat last night is core voltage effect on scores. I did a Heaven run at a fairly high setting (can't recall what the values were) and recoreded the score/ fps. Then upped the voltage a tad and re-ran it at the same settings and got a slightly higher score by about 2fps. Proves to me that you might need a slightly higher voltage than you'd have thought even though the system appears stable, also might indicate a psu showing it's age?

Yes forgot the 4xAA, getting more normal scores now. Afterburner didn't install properly for me, comes up with an error every time it starts and doesn't show voltage control :-( that was latest version. Will try more testing before fitting antec 620 next week.

Seemed to have found the sweet spot for this card, now running at:

1125 core/ 6000 memory @ 1.16v, temps 65c load/ 38 idle in a warm room.

Gives 75.4fps in Heaven, nice and stable in all games. Could go higher but need a substantial increase in volts to do so. I've had the card at 1225 core/ 6000 memory @ 1.25v but thats for benching only.

Card is well quiet and fast, very happy here. :)

Hmm, my temps are a bit higher than that, hit 73'C at 1200/6000 yesterday, although it was 26'C ambient in the room, fans were spinning up too much for my liking too. Running at 1150/6000 now at 1.15v too, still a little too noisy but more like 70'C Max.

Fitting water cooler this week so am hoping for 1250+ with silence, also going for the no.1 7950 in the heaven thread

My temps are a bit lower than yours probably down to the room being a bit cooler than yours maybe? As said, my card needs a bit of a voltage bump to go higher with stability, but will run fine at 1225 core. I'm tempted to try a high speed run at summat like 1275-1300 core but I really cba atm, card runs really well in games and I've just in the process of upgrading to an i5 IB so I'm going to be concentrating on that for a bit when the parts arrive. I might upgrade me psu too, a corsair HX620, thats a good few years old now and "might" be showing it's age.

Sounds to me like you've caught "benchmark fever" :D

Lol yes I think I have caught benchmark fever
Probably the wrong time of year to catch it though lol

My PSU may also be struggling a little, a corsair hx650. I think it will be the noisiest part of my rig once I sort out the fan on the kuhler 620. Don't think I could run a bench at 1225 core, perhaps if I forced the fan on 100% maybe. I will be adding memory and vrm cooling also so let's hope for a nice core speed

No not yet, just tried cat 12.4's so far for early testing. Will try 12.5 and a bit of sky rim action tonight, getting a bit of hitching in the level up screens with 12.4's.

Nice work Pieman, 4 more points and you'll have the fastest 7950 in the Heaven thread

I've not played with mine a great deal but I've being trying to see how high mine can go on the stock vcore of 1.093v and 1030MHz core & 1390MHz mem seems to be about the limit.

I did try a run with more juice and higher clocks but my score was lower so I think I need to overclock my CPU as it's at stock at present.

Looks like I've got a good'un then mate:) I will say though that I reckon 'm well in the range of diminishing returns, a lot of strain on the card with clocks and voltage and only get a small increase.

What is your asic quality pie man? Mine is a paltry 70% :( I'm struggling to get any more than 1200 on auto fan profile too, maybe try a full fan run after my little one goes to bed.

Will be a few days till I can mount my antec 620 :o

You're not gonna believe this but its 62.6%:p Now I don't know if this means anything in particular, but I've found that for gaming I can't really get over 1125 core at any voltage below 1.225v, but at anything above this, the thing takes off like a scolded cat and goes all the way up to nearly 1300 at 1.3v. Its as if theres a dirty great hole in the middle of it's performance that can only be filled by upping the volts. Doesn't really matter though as all the real gains are made in the lower overclock regions, higher, and you in the realms of diminishing returns.

?Hmm if that's the case i don't think I will pay much attention to asic quality in future. Piemans card seems to over clock very well at just 67% quality, and my old gtx 570 had an asic quality of 115% and was only an average overclocker . Seems like a randomly generated number to me.

On another note its good news that you are stii getting improvements at high volts. Hopefully the kuhler 620 can tame the card at 1.25-1.3v.
