7950 or Crossfire X1900?

What would give the best performance, and what would be the best motherboard to suit the crossfire if i went down that route?

What resolution do you play games in? If it's anything below 1920 horizontal then I wouldn't bother with Crossfire or SLI to be honest as a single X1900 XT/XTX or 7900 GTX should keep up pretty easily.

X1900 Crossfire is usualy on top but is surpassed by the 7950 GX2 in some games. An X1900 Crossfire setup would also cost more, but if your budget allows for it then I would definitely go for it.

As for motherboards, I have no idea which motherboard is best for Crossfire. I am sure someone will though.

For the next couple of months it will just be 1280x1024, ill get a 24" monitor nearer xmas when funds allow though.

A single card will easily do 1280x1024, just get the x1900 master card now, and then when you upgrade to a 24" monitor get another one for Crossfire, although saying that depends on how long the x1900's will last for as they are selling in droves as they are so cheap, and they are discontinued now that the x1950's are here, so who knows if you will be able to find a one come Christmas, and 2x x1900's in Crossfire would wallop the 7950 GX2 as they are ony 7900 GT's.

If you want the best board then id say thats the DFi RD580 one, but if not then the Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire is also a good one, if your on Socket 939.

If your going CD2 then the Asus P5W DH would be a good board to get. Solid top end board for Overclocking and Xfire support and is what I use now.

I'm in the same boat m8 and I am totally undecided which setup to go for. I had a X1900 XT-X but wanted to give the GX2 a go because X1900 Xfire was too expensive but now what with the prices ..... I have a 24" Dell and had the X1900 XT/XT-X and it will handle any game on the market with ease.

I'd say get the Crossfire card now myself, as they'll be a lot harder to get ahold of 6 months or so down the line as the X1900 is already discontinued now I think.

can't agree more i paid 250 for mine about 5 month's ago even at that price it was a bargain top card's just hope they will stay round longer than the x1800xt did

The X1800 XT was actually discontinued way back in January, and are still being sold. I seriously doubt the X1900 XT is going anywhere fast.

I can't believe ATi and by extension OCUK would discount these cards so heavily unless there was an agenda, and imo that agenda ultimately is DX10. They're basically getting rid of stock as any dealer would do when the next model is imminent.

Obviously DX10 is still a while off but this time next year I reckon you can pretty much guarantee that people will be talking about "how we ever managed on DX9 cards", etc.

That's not to say the cards now aren't great value, but don't just think that they're suddenly cheap because ATi/Nvidia loves us and wants to give us all a big hug or something

No it's because the X1950 XTX has been released, and soon the X1950 XT will be too. Passing on the torch, exactly the way that the X1800 series was discontinued in January for the X1900 series.

On the contrary, ATI loves OcUK and wants to give them a big hug. Their prices on OcUK have been stupidly low for a long time now.
