7950 v 7970

thanks so do you think i should buy now or hold on untill the next round of cards?
im currebtly running a oc'd 6850

There's nothing really solid on the next generation yet. I'd be surprised if anything comes out before May/June next year but I'm guessing like everyone.

I don't know whether you should buy now or wait only you can really choose that. If you want the games you have to run faster with better settings and you can afford it why not buy now? Now's a good a time as any. :)

I used to be indecisive but now I am not so sure....

I have the MSI Lightning 680 and can only sing the praises of it. A good 60mhz faster than my already decent clocker EVGA 680.

Don't sit on the fence bud. Buy that MSI twin frozr 7950 and don't look back :)

damn you!!
you just made me put it in my basket! im one step closer now to press the checkout button you bad man you......:D:p

Had to go out so it's still in the basket!!
One last question would it be better just to get a 7850 oc it then just renew when the next gen cards come and so on or.... Damn u indescion!!

You have to decide your budget otherwise you'll never land on a buying decision. You'll be well served by an OC'd 7850 for pretty much all of the games currently out there, but if it is within your budget the 7950 is a great choice. At current prices it's hard to justify the performance increase vs cost at moving up to a 7970 - however if your budget is for a 7850 you have no reason to be looking at those anyway! :)

Im looking @ the cheapest 7950 the ocuk one, are these cards decent? iv had HIS the past two graphics cards iv had and they have lasted a good 3 years each one, and HIS always have stock ati coolers just like the OCUK one does,

or should i splash 20 quid more get one with a fancy cooler?

Thanks

Can't remember the last time I had a reference card (stock cooling).
If the extra 20 quid is not a problem for you get a custom cooled version as it will be quieter and cooler under load (and possible idle) so have more scope for a decent oc.

To answer a question you raised earlier, I went 4870 to 4870 crossfire to 5870 to 5870 crossfire to 7970. A single 5870 was the same raw speed as two 4870s, and the single 7970 roughly the same speed as both 5870s, so going 4870x2 to 7970 should be pretty much double the performance.

Check with anandtech.com for comparisons (at work or I would do a link for ya) I believe Q1/2 for the next iterations from AMD and Nvidia.

The results they have are using drivers from months ago. Latest drivers give about a 10% increase average on the results, especially in BF3 where it has improved vastly since launch.

I seriously don't get why people have quoted me for this, when I explained I was at work and was showing a comparison or at least attempting to for the difference between the 4870X2 and a 7950/70.

It does not even have a 4870X2 Vs 7950/70, so it was my bad in the first place. As a rough guide I use AnandTech for comparisons to try to help posters see the difference.

i can afford either tbh just not sure how long the 7950 will last before upgrade which means im even more worried about the 7850 due to it being slower it will need replacing sooner.

i just want it to be a worthwhile upgrade not a minor bump in fps.

7950 is a good price right now, but then again so is the 7850. 7970 is not worth the extra over the 7950 imo, it is very easy to overclock a 7950 past 7970 performance just on stock voltage.
