7950GT Capable?

Afternoon ladies.

I think my 7950GT has returned from the graveyard and is working again  So I am asking about it's capability when it comes to monitors and resolution. As I was a poor gentleman at the time, I could only stretch to the 256MB version.

Will this be capable of handling a 19" widescreen LCD (Samsung 940BW seems pretty good, 1440 x 900) or even a 20" widescreen? I know it's pushing it with it being 256MB, but I've only currently got £180 and so can't really afford a new GPU and monitor (unless I convince the RMA people that the problem is still here, but intermittent - in which case I'll have an extra £110.)

Your opinions on my plan of action?

Should EASILY handle 1440*900 = 1296000 pixels

1280*1024 = 1310720 pixels, which is the 'normally' res of a non widescreen 19". It will prob be able to handle 1600×1200 (1920000 pixels) or widescreen 1680x1050 (1764000 pixels) okish. With todays games it should handle the 1680 reasonably well, but games like crysis/CoH/lost planet you'll have to check for yourself.

I would keep it and overclock and pay more for a better quality monitor (higher res), and then save up for a decent card for when the next gen cards come out. (g90/g92/3900 etc).

EDIT: What was the prob with your card anyway?

It used to freeze up during intensive stuff.. i.e. it froze up and rebooted during BF2142 at 1024x768. I think it's fixed now.

I've found a 22" monitor that has a price tag I really, really like ;) Also comes with a 3-year warranty, so it seems like a very good buy.

It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050 - reckon my 7950GT will handle it? Not really expecting any of the soon-to-be-released-crazy-graphics-games to run amazingly, but could I expect high settings on any sort of lateish games?

It would depend on the game you're playing

I play CS:Source and get really good fps out of my 7900 GS (1680x1050)

I would imagine a 7950gt would be a lot better :)
