Hey guys, i've an offer from a guy to trade his 7950gx2 with my x1900xt256mb, with topup from my side..

hmm.. i've heard that there's some issues that it doesnt work with some game, and result in only one of the 7900gt being used..
will there be any problems with battlefield2142 and need for speed:carbon?

also, what are the temps of the card on load, and can the fan be heard on full speed?

lastly, is it worth it to upgrade to that card?

Thanks..

would depend on what resolution you play on i think, might want to post that too.. and your screen's max?
Id say save your cash till nvidia dx10 refresh & atis dx10 cards - so january or something?
is the card performing well for you at the moment? you know what they say, if it aint broke, dont fix it :)

I love my 7950GX2 and I've yet to find a game/benchmark where it doesn't run much faster than my brothers 7900GTO (clocked to GTX speed)... it needs a good CPU to push it tho - IMO the E6600 at stock speed is minimum for this card...

That depends on how much? Its a fantastic card, silent with amazing frame rates. Bit of a pain in dual monitor setup. Otherwise a good increase from the XT.

running at 1280x1024, but might change to a 20"ws soon..

hmm.. i'm not sure how to compare the speed of a c2d and an amd now, kinda lost touch since c2d came out..

so will my opty170 clocked at 270 bottleneck the card?

An opty170 clocked to 2.75 with some decent low latency RAM will tuck in around E6600 speed in synthetic benchmarks tho it won't do quite as well for gaming, you should in theory be able to about max out a 7950GX2 at stock speeds... but your pretty much maxed out... unlike the C2D you won't be OCing to 3.4+...

Side note I had no idea opty165 and 170s were so fast, a bit of OCing really brings the performance up on them...

the most important question still hasnt been answered!

how does your current card perform? and will its performance be sufficient till january when the next generation cards will be more widely available, at cheater prices?

How much exactly do you have to 'top up' the deal with for the GX2?

To be honest, if you're playin at 1280 i'd definatly say save your cash till january, especially if your thinkin about buyin a 20" widescreen.
You could use the extra pennies to buy a beastier card or higher res widescreen.
A little sacrifice for a fair gain, its hardly a sacrifice though - a x1900XT, some of us still have x800XTs :D

the reason i'm thinking of changing to the 7950gx2 is i cant stand the noise of the stock cooler of the 1900..
the top up amount is something like $160SGD, which i think approx 40-50 pounds?

hmm, anyway, i think i shall go for the cheaper option by just changing the cooler and wait for price to drop further =)

Thanks..

even at 1280x and 1440x the 7950GX2 shows significant performance gains with the right CPU over a x1900 or even x1950... in the 8800 v ati thread the guy said he was getting 45-50fps with his and in roughly the same scene with roughly the same settings my 7950GX2 was getting around 200 (after I upped the CPU and GPU core speeds) and around 120 with stock speeds... my first pic with 88fps (and even thats a big improvement over his framerate) was due to some setting being wrong.

the systems an opteron though, so the performance isnt going to be a massive leap, right now I think it would be a good option to just swap the cooler and wait for dx10 cards to become more mainstream, more worth the money.
im getting the impression you dont feel it neccessary to upgrade for a performance boost right now? otherwise you would have jumped at the upgrade chance, right?

ya, the reason of considering is due to the noise of the x1900xt, and since the topup amount is not much, but if i dont really benefit from it much, then i dont see a point in getting it anymore, as the value of the 7950gx2 will be dropping..

thansk =)
