7970 1080p gaming

7970 overkill for 1080p gaming?
currently have a 2GB 6950 which is probably being held back by my Q6600..which I plan to change to a i5-3570k soon, which I hope will increase the 6950's performance

Save some cash and go for the 7950 bud

So close in performance, the extra for the 7970 isn't worth it (unless you inted to do lots of benching).

It depends what you want from your GPU. It's probably slight overkill, but if you want guaranteed 60FPS, ultra settings, etc, it might not be.

Depends.
If you've got a 120Hz monitor then no.
If you're going to be playing Far Cry 3 with all eye candy turned on then no.
If you're going to be playing Theme Hospital, then yes, yes it will be.

overkill maybe but you will also have it for a long time.

I have a 7970 and i5 3750k at 1080p and it's flawless, plus opportunity is there to upgrade to 1440p etc..

This but with an 2500k.

I plan to move up to 1440p when money allows.

My setup is 2500k, 7970, 1440p and I can confirm that even a single 7970 can handle that resolution quite well indeed. 7970 at 1440p performs way better than an OC GTX 570 at 1080p, to give you some perspective.

How does it handle full ultra bf3 @ 1440p when overclocked?

I can tell you that it's bloomin lovely at 1200 on Ultra.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. That's pretty much the only game I play. (This is Bungalows btw

).

Full ultra is more than possible at stock. I tried it with a mild overlock on my volt locked Giga 7970 and it was even smoother. Did a quick bench on Caspian and got 39 minimum and 47 average (but that average was deceptively low because it was capped at 59).

When I get my new card installed I'll post up some footage of me kicking ass on CQ247 (as if there's any footage of me not kicking ass!) so you can see how BF3 runs at 1440p/7970.
