7970 Crossfire problems

Hello All,

I have a problem with my current rig.

I have a coolermaster 850 PSU and two Gigabyte 7970s

First off, the first 7970 had a defective fan which lead it to overheat when i first installed it - OCUK fixed the fan for me and i've been using it in a crossfire ever since.

When I play games like BF3 after approximately 30minutes my pc reboots, when it reboots the bottom card (the one which was previously broken) fan goes to 100% for about 20 seconds as if the fan is remembering it overheated, the top card (they are an inch apart) which runs 15 degrees hotter does not exhibit the same behaviour, the fan stays at 20%

If i disconnect the 2nd card, and run heaven 2.5 for an hour, my top card stays at 75 degrees but my pc does not randomly reboot, if i use the 2nd card, or use both cards in crossfire my pc reboots.

Basically ive pretty much had enough of this, and im going to drive to OCUK tomorrow to request a refund on my card, but i have a question.

Do i have to wait for them to test the card themselves to see if it crashes on their rig, or as its only 20 days old and I ordered over the net can i simply say im dissatisfied with the purchase and not have to wait around for a refund

this is simply a case of 'which is quickest'

many thanks

You're entitled to a full refund if the card is faulty but OcUK will want to test it first.

I doubt you'll be able to just walk in and ask for a refund.

Edit:

To rephrase that, you can ask but I doubt you'll get it there and then.

I had a similiar issue as you a while back. Turned out to be the psu. Might want to check that first before sending the cards back. :)

For some reason everyone likes to blame the PSU! 850W should be MORE THAN ENOUGH to power those two cards.

Which PSU do you have exactly + model number?

To me it sounds like the card is defective.

What you have just described here, document it meticulously and start with a webnote. Let things take there course, don't try to rush these things otherwise you will end up more frustrated.

When the PC shuts down and the fan spins up fast on the GPU, it's a sign of the card flunking out, either because of an overly enthusiastic overclock or because of a fault.
