7970 Farcry 3 problems

I purchased Farcry 3 whilst it was offer last night. Downloaded and played for an hour with no problems. After the tutorial/escape mission had finished, I started to get random crashes. It's happening every 5-10 minutes now.

I'm using a reference 7970 and during BF3 the card has always ran hot. Usually 70-78 degrees at full load when gaming for a few hours. I've never had a crash in a game before with my current setup. I only have a small GPU O/C, not at the computer now but I O/C in CCC, something like 1000/1450 with 20% power increase. I game at 1200p.

I'm crashing to desktop with a driver failed to respond but has now recovered message. I'm using 13.1 drivers. I noticed that my GPU temps are hitting 83 degrees whilst in game. I've tried lowering most graphic settings but I'm getting the same result.

Tonight ill try the beta 13.3 drivers, running my GPU at stock settings and using windowed mode. Is there any other advice anyone can give me? I'm still a little baffled about why this is happening for the first time.

Far Cry 3 seems to require more voltage or clocks turning down to be stable. I got something similar on my 7950 although mine was overclocked more. I turned it down by 25 MHz and it was stable again. So you can either clock yours down slightly or up the voltage a touch.

I am just playing through Far Cry 3 now and the performance is not great in Ultra.

I believe it is the engine and not the drivers.

Latest driver (13.3) is streets ahead but crashes after about an hour of play for me, even at stock <40C

Bump the core voltage a notch.

Clock your memory up to 1500 as well once stable as its rated for that speed. Lord knows why they shipped under clocked at 1375.

Ok. New drivers, fresh install, stock GPU settings and all is ok. ( so far ) I have set my fan settings to manual control in CCC to 55%. I use headphones so noise isn't an issue. My temps are down to 74 degrees max now.

Quick question, will the fan running at 55% cause any problems? I'm sure on auto settings the fastest they go is about 45%, don't want to damage the fan but obviously I don't want to overheat the GPU either.

Hopefully I will get another few hours without a hitch.

Managed a solid 3 hours last night and 3 hours this morning without a crash. So I guess Farcry 3 doesn't like overclocked or under voltaged cards. The new drivers have helped with performance to. 50-70 fps with everything on highest settings. Happy days.

I find enabling v sync helps keep the temp down, my msi oc 7970 runs it well, but can get hot and yup the blower can be noisy! My roccat kones are great tho, hardly hear a thing with them on.
